I like my mag release to either be ambi or on the right side of the pistol. I use my index finger to actuate the release and it allows mag changes with out significantly altering my strong hand grip. Also it is the same as AR platform and makes muscle memory easy to cement.

Basic Rules of Safe Gun Handling
All guns are always loaded.
Never point a gun at anything you are unwilling to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Know your target.
Keep your gun at the minimum level of readiness.
Call me stupid and I'm no part ninja, but if it came to an encounter in the dark and I was defending my home I would not want to cover anything and everything I wanted lit up with the muzzle of my gun.
