Back when we had better 22 lr choices I bought a savage mark 2 that was accurate and since then it has only shot wolf target ammo which explains why I haven't shot it in a long while.

Just last week I got a cz ultralux 455 22 lr that I used cci standard velocity rounds in . I think it's a better rifle than the savage but with only iron sights I held off on using my wolf ammo match. Short of using thunderbolt which I heard leaded up somebody's gun (can't verify)there shouldn't be any issues using lesser quality 22 lr on the rifle is there?

This sounds more silly as I'm typing this.

22LR ammo may lead a barrel.

Not silly at all. A 22 LR in S&W M17 revolver with Rem. promo ammo formed a ring just past the leade, in the rifling. Didn't believe it. Cleaned gun and refired, watching lead ring build. Accuracy went away. Never happened before or since . No damage was done. You would have to fire another bullet into a blockage, in a barrel, to damage it. IMO.

My Custom CZ Bench gun shoots wolf ammo, I keep 5 or six bricks around all the time.. when I can't get Wolf, I get SK.... its the same stuff, from the same factory... the reason why I like Wolf is it makes the tightest groups and is repeatable after 300 rounds... Wolf is lubricated, and reacts very favorably in my gun,
I want rounds where the quality control is good enough to be repeatable from lot to lot.
I like lubricated rounds in my High Standard Victor comp pistol and in My CZ comp bench gun.

Three places have Wolf ammo in stock right now, both wolf match and wolf extra.

Does bad 22 lr ruin an accurate rifle?

Does it ruin a perfectly good rifle? No, because we clean the rifle. I have fired Wolf Target and the stuff, while a little dirty, groups well out of an Anschutz target rifle I have. Sooner or later all rifles need cleaned, that is my thinking anyway. The more a rifle bore becomes fouled with leading the more the accuracy will begin to suffer. Does it ruin the rifle? No, it just renders the rifle in need of a good cleaning. The Wolf ammunition shoots fine for me. Certainly no worse than some other ammunition. Depending on the rifle, some ammunition will shoot better than other ammunition. I like Wolf and the lubed bullets. I also shoot some of the lower end Eley and Remington Target plus a variety of Aguila ammunition. Even low end Remington Thunderbolts and Winchester. Nothing will ruin the rifle, just get it dirty. Nothing a good ocasional cleaning won't fix. :)

Just My Take....

I shall use my bulk ammo on it then so long as it doesn't lead to permanent changes. I do clean my guns after every outing even my 22s with bore cleaner although lately I've just used a boresnake and some solvent on a patch instead of bore foam cleaner.

Btw I consider my wolf ammo a relatively premium 22 . I get 5 shot groups cloverleafing benched at 50 yards with a scope if I do my part. The not so good 22 I was alluding to would be Aguila colibri. Rem golden bullet, thunderbolt etc....

Evil twin at 18 cents a round I'll settle for cci for now. Thanks for the heads up on the ammo though.

do stay away from thunderbolt.
i believe it could damage my 22/45. not sure about rifles.
i use federal bulk for plinking but i use wolf for serious work. it gives me better groups than even eley.

i have a long thread where people talk about thunderduds at the ruger forum. ''thunderbolt 22lr warning''. search that n read those posts.

Only .22 ammo I have had a problem with, in terms of reliability and accuracy, is anything made by Remington. The Top Three in my guns are Wolf, CCI, and Federal.

I was talking about accurate ammo... not ammo that hurts a rifle...none of todays ammo will hurt a rifle but hurt its performance.. there is a world of difference between a Remington golden bullet and Wolf match , the golden bullet is used for plinking, hitting steel plates, cans , balloons, critters... Wolf match puts five bullets in the same hole.
The OP was talking wolf, that's why I mentioned it...that why I posted the gun bot. net link, it offers up real time availability with a link to the seller. Every thing is available if shooting is more precious to you than a few bucks.

my gun likes wolf better than stuff costing twice as much.
it will give me a 1'' group at 25 yards in a 22/45, 5 1/2'' bull barrel.
none of the others i tested will do that.
no, i'm not claiming i can do that free hand....yet.

If you'd like to feel better about using your match ammo in the CZ Ultra Lux, spend $125 for a set of Brno Standard Target Sights. Cheaper than a good scope and you'll be very surprised at how accurate that long barreled rifle will be with these aperture sights.

Can't say that cheap ammo will hurt a rifle but I'm doing my best to try.

I guess I've put well over a hunert rounds of golden bullets through a CZ trainer today with no ill effects that I can see. Then again, I'm only shooting at 25 yards off hand at a 6" target. Afterwords fired 10 rounds of CCI quite from a field rest and got ~2" at 25 yards. I don't think I hurt anything but my ego.

Nice! I need to try some Wolf Match.

I've been finding excellent results with Eley Target through my Kimber 82, like one 45 cal-sized hole at 50. Smelly ammo though.

Its not about money for some, its about repeatability.. if a 5 cent round works for anybody, that's great, I know what works in my fire arms and what I expect at the target. But usually better ammo cost more money. But then if you are only shooing cans it doesn't much mater. Its all about fun within your budget...

13 cents a round.... just offering a source.

I'm still trying to figure out the definition of "bad" 22lr??

I've never had any bad 22lr, at least it's not bad until someone drops it on the ground and picks it back up!

I HAVE had some that's not as accurate as others, but it's not bad ammo.

I won't buy Remington Thunderbolts. Too many FTFs in my MkII. Wife's 10/22 shoots them just fine, though. Go figure.

I've almost always shot Winchester Wildcats through it. They don't get much cheaper than that. It's never caused a problem that I would consider ruining it. Just gets dirty. I use a bore snake, too, most of the time. You should be fine with what you're doing.

eviltwin I get the same results with wolf match with my scoped savage mark II rifle. belows a pic from an old rimfire match submission pre panic 50 yrd front rest and rear bag 5 shots I think

Furncliff those sights sound great but look complicated to attach. will look into it but will enjoy the gun as is for now

going back to the issue. if your barrel gets heavily leaded with something like thunderbolt how do you get it out. Is it just the usual cleaning or parker hale jag, kroil and jb bore compound?

I'm not interested in thunderbolt at all in fact I've turned my nose up at it even after seeing some bricks available during the panic. This is just in case I try something that turns out to be something as horrible.

i've used most the bulk ammos. they are not very accurate but only thunderbolt scares me so much i wouldn't use it for free.
since the thunderbolt, i have not tried any remington, n i won't.

I found wolf/SK to be very inconsistent in cooler weather. I personally don't consider cci-sv a step down in quality. ymmv.
