I have heard such great things about Unique I'm hoping some of you loaders have had promising results with unique/auto-disk/combo. I randomly acquired my first pound.

Also, of the four handgun powders I have on hand, Imr 4227, bullsye, unique and a tad bit of w-213, which do you recommend for charging my first stout 9mm's?

How will I know when I am starting to approach high pressures? My 40s always look rough, even in moderate target stuff. I intend on working up, and staying within published info. I am annoyed with the slow velocities of my current go to loads. After 10, 000 rounds. I trust myself to explore energy.

I will not be using my auto-disk for these proposed stout loads, at least not for now.

Thanks in advance and please pardon the ramble thread. I promised it started off as a one part question.

W213?
If you have Win231 it meters great in the Autodisk. + or -.1 gr all day long for me. I have had good results in 9mm with it in light to medium heavy 9mm loads.
For full power 9mm loads I like something a little slower.

Unique and the autodisk (and other measures as well)
Unique is known for not metering well. Bummer because it does shoot well.
On any charge less than about 5gr I had up to a .2gr charge swing using the Autodisk.
Larger charges metered better, but for 9mm you may be in the area where it does not meter well in the Autodisk.
When I was using it for 9mm I just allowed for the charge swing and loaded it.
Ammo shot ok. IE every thing at least .2gr under MAX.

Thanks Dudedog. Across 500 rounds I get .3 variance even with w-231. In the target sector I except that. I also wonder if my scale may be .1 grains inconsistent. Sometimes you can move the holder around on the scale plate and the reading changes.

I'll be loading 124 grain jhps. How do would you charge 9's with unique? On hand I have the autodisk, three scales, the Lee dippers that come with the dies. I also have the Lee perfect powder measure, but it's full of rifle powder, lol.

I concur with DD - Win 231 is very consistent through my Lee Pro AutoDisk. Claims of +/-.1 grains are perfectly plausible. I get 4.6 gr from the .43 disk setting, which is right in line with the volume density calculations I've done for W231, so no surprise there.

Lee Autodisk, Bullseye, and 9mm make a good combination for me. Bullseye meters well and shoots well in all cartridges I've tried it (380 ACP, 9mm, 38 spl, 45 ACP).

Good Luck.

I'm regretting the Unique. I can't even get it to disperse at all out of my Lee perfect powder measure. I guess I'll wait for my cherished 231.

Thanks again guys.

I use green dot and could never get the lee autodisc to drop it accurately so I use the lee scoops and a powder trickler. Just shove a powder funnel in the powder through die and you are good to go.

I've run several pounds of Unique through the Perfect Powder Measure. I give the handle a good tap at the top and bottom of the stroke and it maintains +-.1 grains.
The hopper has an open and closed position so make sure it is all the way open. I have an adjustable charge bar on auto disk and its the only way to go on the turret press, always +-.1, I think the rotation of the turret keeps things flowing.

My powder trickle won't drop Unique at all. Nothing comes out. Green dot appears to produce worthy velocities.

When you use the Lee dippers, do you weigh out each charge?

Yup each charge is weighed, I use the lee scoops to get close to my desired weight and trickle the rest. I use a rcbs powder trickler which works well with green dot once it is primed. Seems to need a few spins before the powder drops out.

Uniques metering qualities are well Unique.
The listed VMD is .1092 so a .49 disk should be about 4.5gr at listed VMD.
My jar seemed to be have a VMD of about .13.(calculated by throwing charges from different disks and weighing them) So for my jar a .61 disk was about 4.7gr. Lyman 49 lists 4.5 - 5gr of Unique with a 125gr JHP. See what your disks are throwing, throw about 10 charges and average the weight. CC/gr = VMD.
Find a disk that gives you about 4.5-4.7 grains and load away. Most likely you won't notice a big difference even with the charge swing. At 4.7 +.3 would put you at a the listed MAX so even with +.3 you should probably be ok.
When I used Unique I filled the hopper on the pro disk then tapped it a bunch of times to help the powder settle. I never did it but I have heard you can get it to meter better if you tap the hopper every time before you throw the charge.

I haven't bought any Unique after the first 2lbs I used. I would buy it again if it was the only thing available, but otherwise I would pick something else. (that meters :), even Promo meters better for me and it has big flakes)

Unique meters great through my autodisk.
I've found the biggest factor in the autodisk dropping inconsistently is vibration.
Any variances in the vibration between rounds will have a direct effect on the way powder settles in the cavity of the powder measure.
Keep everything uniform and the charges will be uniform in my experience.

When I'm setting up new/different powder charge, I'll fill the cartridge a couple of times, dump it back THEN rotate the turret using the handle all the way around, (4 handle pulls), to make sure the weight is is as close as possible to what I'm actually putting into the case.

No problems with 4756, 7625, AutoComp, BE86, BLC(2), Bullseye, CFE Pistol, H335, N320, PowerPistol, Promo, TAC, Universal or WSF. (may have forgot something) All these are around + or - .1 or spot on most of the time.
(weighing to .1, if I use the GEM20 and weigh to .01 less charges are exactly the same but for me .1 is close enough)

Unique did meter better in larger .357 size charges.

OP do you have the Autodisk or the Prodisk with the rubber wiper?
The Prodisk does work better for me.

Unique metered poorly through my auto disc. Win 231, HS6 and Longshot have all metered well for me. The adjustable charge bar is a great addition to the auto disc. For a stout load, use the slower powders, or slowest you can find data for.

The Autodisk will work with Unique with charges >5gr but only with the disks not with the adjustable charge bar. You can produce very accurate and very stout 9x19 loads with Unique but it is a PITA to meter from any powder measure. You will always get at least +/- .1-.2gr of variation.

That charge bar works great with ball powders but it does not work well with the large extruded flake powders like Unique and the Dots. It will meter 231/HP-38 just fine down to about 2.5gr.

The technique I use to dial in my volume setting for bulky powders like Unique is to take the average of ten powder throws. I do not adjust disks or micrometers based off a single throw, only the average of 10. If you try to adjust off of individual thrown charges, you'll wind up chasing it back and forth around your target weight.

What type of powder trickler are you using? I use an RCBS and it will trickle Unique but I have to angle the base a little. I use a folded piece of paper to tilt it toward the tube opening.

I only use ball powders in the PAD. Unique charges were to inconsistent. I'm not really a fan of it but if I'm using it the charge is thrown w/ an RCBS Chargemaster. Only way I've been able to get a consistent charge w/ it.

Of the powders you listed I would use W231. It was the only pistol powder I used for a long time. It meters like water in the PAD. Bullseye should work equally as well. Any flake or stick powders are relegated to other measures.

Side note,
best powder I have found for Stout 9mm is Longshot. Within reason the heavier you load it the happier it is.
It meters decent and can be found sometimes when there is no other pistol powder around.

I have never used the auto disk...I use the charge bar and have never had any issues with any powder including Unique....Unique is my go to powder for 9mm and 40 next to HP-38
