I used to carry Golden Saber's, then I switched to Federal 9BPLE since it was cheap enough to (somewhat regularly) practice with. I have been considering going back to carrying a more expensive bonded bullet. However, I am leery of Remington since some of their other ammo is absolute garbage - 12ga gun club loads in particular. Does anyone have any issues with Remington Pistol Ammo, or know if the SD pistol ammo is made in the same plant/by the same subcontractor as the the shotgun ammo?

I purchased some Remington Golden Sabers for my R9 since Ranger "T" Series was super-scarce. I was getting fried egg primers and failure to ignite. I ran them through my B6P without any problem but Golden Sabers and my R9 don't mix well.

Since I have a good supply now of RA9T I have no need to purchase Golden Sabers.

IMO, their "Black Belt" ammo is a failure.

When I want cheap practice ammo that closely reproduces the recoil impulse of premium defense ammo I purchase Lawman TMJ.

I will not use Remington ammo any more after an issue with .380acp where the primer was so thin it was pierced by the firing pin and got stuck on it like a donut on a stick. This caused a dangerous discharge when I closed the slide on a round in the chamber. Maybe a one off but very dangerous.

HUH? I shoot thousands of these a year - all have worked just fine; but then I also have no issue with Thunderbolts or Golden 22s either, let alone thew Sabers

Yup, Remington Gun club shells. They have a tendency to stick, and they are too soft so the extractor will rip them apart (see pics). I can't even make them work in my 870. I now carry a wooden dowel with me so that I can knock the shell out after the head has been ripped off.

I have them in my 38, because I can't find GDHP 130 Snubbie loads around here. No problems, but I'd prefer to have the Speers.

Ultimate Home Defense is just bad engineering. I've seen the jackets separate too often in testing videos to trust it. The metal jacket expands nice and looks like it can cut well, but for just a bit more Winchester PDX1, a bonded bullet, has much sharper petals.

Remington UHD is the saddest hollow point I've seen made by the big 5 ammo companies, but it's not the saddest hollow point I've ever seen. That is reserved for PPU.

Golden Saber is Remington's best ammo. In revolvers it's great, but semi auto I never hear any praise for it because there's better out there for the same price.

Remington HTP is another case of there is better for less money. They drive those bullets so fast in the HTP they come apart. It wouldn't be a bad load if they made a specific bullet for that higher velocity.

UMC JHP is actually pretty good for the money. The bullet is much better constructed than HTP or UHD.

As for the FMJ range ammo, while this is a SD ammo thread, I do want to give some praise and say UMC's mega pack is a great value.

I don't care for their shotgun ammo either. Winchester makes great target ammo and Federal great HD ammo and both Wincester and Federal make the best foster slugs around.

So, would I trust Remington? Depends on what ammo you're talking about. If you gave me UHD, I would say absolutely not but for Golden Sabers I wouldn't feel too bad. For me, it comes down to I can get better for less or better for a bit more. There is no ammunition made by Remington that can be called the best.

There's so much wrong with the Remington brand these days.

I've had no problem with any 9mm, .45acp, .38 spl., or .357 mag Golden Sabers in any of my guns over the years that Golden Saber has been around. Works great. I prefer the newer GD and HST in autos now because they are a bit better bullet construction than the older GS.

The .38 Spl 125+P is still my round of choice in revolvers. Most accurate.

I know this is about SD ammo but IMO there has been a decrease in quality in "bargain" ammo in general.

A few years ago I started a policy of inspecting my ammo before putting it into my firearms.

Early 2012 I purchased a box of Remington 115gr L9MM3 for around $11 and when I lined the rounds up on the counter top there were some short and some tall. It was obvious just by looking at them. So I started taking a caliper to them and there was a 1/32" difference between the tallest rounds and the shortest rounds.

That's too much variation, for my comfort anyway. I haven't seen that type of variation with WWB, or Federal "Champion". I should have taken the box back and gotten a refund. But it's pretty hard to get them to take ammo back. I haven't purchased the L9MM3 since.

Well gents, with those type of problems I think someone should contact the manufacturer or the marketer. It is possible they are not aware of the problems that you are experiencing. I think they ought to be made aware in the event there is a need for a recall or product advisory of some sort.

Its rather refreshing to hear a subject on ammunition that doesn't include WWB and Wal-Mart. Just Saying!

Sounds like Remington ammo has gone downhill just like their rifles, lol.

I still like UMC 55 grain stuff for my AR-15.....because I like to re-load Remington brass.

I currently carry Remington Golden Sabers. I can't recall at the moment whether they're 124 or 147 grains. I haven't shot a ton of them, but I also haven't had any problems.

Depends on the load

My agency used the 9m.m. GOLDEN SABRE round in the GLOCK 17 before we went over to the .40 S&W and nobody ever complained about it.

For me, I use the REMINGTON ammo in the 100 round boxes for both practice and carry depending on the caliber.

I like the standard pressure 9m.m. 115 jhp a lot. It is a very reliable feeder and works well in the testing that I have seen. Also, cheap enough to use for practice.

I use the 88 grain .380ACP jhp for practice ammo, but I am not sure it will expand enough for self defense.

In .38 Special, I use the .38 Special 125 grain sjhp +P load in my revolvers as my self defense load and for +P practice. When they are on sale, I use them for my regular practice ammo instead of the WWB 130 grain fmj loads.

In 380 have seen as much as 60fps difference per shot .Also others have found all over the place. I don't want a HP that all ready not big on power to very that much . I stopped using and went to Corbon DPX or their HP

I haven't had any problem. I have been carrying 165 grain Remington Golden Sabers in my .40 for a while now. I've only shot a couple of boxes of them as I just shoot a magazine & replace it every six months to a year (whenever I think about it) but they have run fine. Are they the best. I have no idea but I believe they will work if I need them to.

One of my little 9mm's is loaded with the HTP 124 grain ammunition. I haven't had any problem yet though admittedly I just bought it because a 50 round box was $23.00 or so at Academy. I would like to find some testing someone has done on this ammunition but I haven't found anything yet.

This is 115 grain HTP, but I would expect the results to be worse with 124 grain as it will be moving slower and be less prone to opening up.

Sebastian, I tried the 9MM 124 Golden Sabers in one of my always reliable 9MM pistols. It became an instant jammamatic with the Golden Sabers. Golden Sabers must work fine in many other pistols since I have little doubt that Remington sells all they can manufacturer. I've shot a fair amount of the "old tech" Remington R9MM6 9MM 115 grain +P JHP and Remington R45AP2 .45ACP 185 grain non +P JHP issued by our local police dept. Only gripe I have with these is that they are VERY high flash in low light. Both do feed reliably though. Just a comment about the #1 1/2 primers Remington sells, and apparently uses in some of it's factory pistol ammo. This primer seems more prone to piercing that any other American made primer I've used. They are the only factory primers I've had pierce in standard pressure 9MM factory ammo. Remington UMC-115 grain standard pressure ball for instance. Different lot numbers occasionally used in a variety of 9MM pistols and revolvers over a period of years. I've also had primers pierce when using the Remington R9MM6 115 +P 9MM in different guns. I don't know if the 1 1/2 or 5 1/2 primers are used in Remington 9MM +P ammo. I used Remington rifle, pistol and shotgun ammunition, primers and other components with no issues for many years. I no longer buy Remington ammunition or components.

BTW, I've used a fair amount of the Federal 9BPLE 9MM +P+ ammo in pistols, revolvers and carbines. Never any issues at all. I would prefer the old, low tech, 9BPLE over any of the Remington 9MM ammo for duty, carry,SD,HD, etc....ymmv

There was a time long ago that I "trusted" factory ammo. Then I took up reloading and discovered just how poorly made factory ammo can be. You would be amazed.:scrutiny: After having seen factory rounds with primers installed backwards or crushed sideways in the case and cases with no flash hole it was fairly obvious that if you want ammo good enough to stake your life on you must build it yourself because no one is going to have higher standards than you are when it absolutely positively must work every time.

A few years back when they were cheap, I bought 5,000 Golden Saber bullets: 230 grain for 45ACP, 124 grain for 9mm and 165 & 180 grain for 40 S&W.

I've been working that stock down for a while now with only one problem. The 40s won't fit tight in any Remington case. Not even those cases from fired Golden Saber loads. The bullets would simply spin in the case once seated. But since I have a couple of five gallon buckets of other brands, that little problem was solved.

For me, Remington Golden Saber (my stuff and factory) has worked extremely well. That's in Ruger, Glock, CZ, Browning and etc. Just no problems at all in any guns. As is the usual case, YMMV.

UMC JHP is athan HTP or UHDctually pretty good for the money. The bullet is much better constructed

I carry these in both my 9mm and .380 pistols (115-grain and 88-grain, respectively.) I've shot hundreds and hundreds of them, and have never had an issue. They're readily available in my area as well.

I bought a few boxes of 155gr .40 JHP that one third of the boxes had dangerous bullet setback. The only Remington ammo I buy now is slugs.
