Hi All, I have an opportunity to pick up a slightly used GP100 (stainless, 4in barrel, newer production around 2010ish). It belonged to an elderly person who passed away. The person had picked up the gun (their first) in their golden years because of the felt need for some type of home protection since they were alone in the house. I don't know if the gun was ever really fired. I figure there might have been some test firing early on, but for the most part it was kept holstered in a drawer in the home. As far as I know the gun is in pristine condition. Asking price is $500. This price seemed reasonable to me, but I don't know what the going prices are for the GP100. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Tubby, at this point (and after having received feedback here and on The Firing Line Forums), I'm very much interested in picking up the gun. It seems like a reasonable price, and the conditions is near NIB, so I told the seller that I want to purchase it. I appreciate the feedback.

You can get a new GP100 for around $569. I wouldn't pay more than $475 for a slightly used GP100. New guns are like new cars in that they lose value as soon as you buy them just not as much. People are asking ridiculous prices for used guns these days that's why I buy new whenever I can. I saw a guy trying to sell a Ruger SP101 for $550 on a facebook page and people were commenting on what a great deal it was and how they'd buy it if they had the money. I reminded them that they can get the same gun nib for $470 from buds tax free. Buying new guns also gets you a warranty, Ruger has the best customer support in the world so that won't be a problem in this case. I'd try to talk him down to $450 or buy new if I was you.

You will probably have to pay $600 to be able to take a new GP100 home with you. Offer $475 and see what happens - if no sale, give them $500 if it is really 'like new' and be happy with your new purchase.

You did not mention caliber so I am assuming you are looking at a 357 GP-100. $500 for a 327 mag is a bargain as they bring over twice that on Gunbroker and those prices continue to climb. If it is what I was looking for and buying used means tax free, I would consider it.

You can always offer less. I'd look the gun over, hem and haw a bit...point out any flaws, no matter how small. Then offer $400.00. They probably won't take that, so then you ask, "What's your best price?" Have cash money in your hand, but not the full $500. "Well, will you take $450.00?" Start counting the money. Only and I mean ONLY reach around into your wallet and pull out the last $50.00 if the seller really refuses to budge, and you really want the gun.
"OK...You're killing me...I'll have to skip lunch, but I'll go $475.00....no? How about $490.00? OK...Ok...$500.00." A big SIGH is appropriate here...You're really falling on your sword. One last try..."You did say $490?...No... OK...deal.

Good info, and I appreciate all everyone's feedback. I also very much appreciate the bargaining tips, as I am terrible at that, but I did call the only shop in the region that carries the GP100. They are asking $629 for the 4in stainless 357 mag. I have decided to go ahead and give the seller what they are asking. The gun is pristine. It was bought for an elderly person who has since passed. She never fired the gun. Her husband may have test fired it, but it wasn't fired much beyond that. I agree that the price could be a little better, but based on all of the feedback I've received, it seems that $500 is a fair price. Thanks again to everyone for helping me out.

I picked up a new GP100 4" SS at the end of last year for $559.00 I watched the price go up and down for a month or so and when it went below $560.00 I jumped.

I think you got a fair deal by the sound of the condition. I just paid 600 plus tax for a 5" SS GP100 and I would have gladly paid 500 for one in very good condition. Enjoy it. I love shooting mine.
Stumbled on to this thread while doing a search, and thought I should update. I purchased the GP100, and I really like it. I did give the $500 for it, as it seemed like a reasonable price (although it wasn't a steal by any means). It came with the box, and all of the original paperwork, lock, etc. It has a test fire date of 6/11. Was purchased new by the original owner in Nov of that year. The original sales receipt of $609 was still in the box ($579 + tax, fees, etc). Current prices at the same shop where this gun was originally bought is now $629 before taxes, etc. The only change made to the revolver was to switch out the original black front sight with a Ruger orange insert front sight. The original black sight was in the box. Found out it has 100 rounds through it (1 box to by the owner to sight in, and second box during a second range trip by the original owner). I definitely prefer my SP101 for carry, but the GP100 makes a fine HD and range gun IMO. Surprised at how nice the trigger is. Nicer than either of my two SP models. The GP100 is a little too large for my wife, but it fits my hands nicely.

$500 was certainly fair. New ones are pushing $600 at least, with some shops getting closer to $700. The orange front sight is a good addition, too, and worth another $15-$20. That was one change I immediately made to my GP100, since it was hard to distinguish the front sight with the stock black blade.
