I've got an old M1A1 and have been looking for ammo for it. Was looking at GGG in comparison to say IMI. After having seen what happens to ammo in *bad* storage conditions, I'm a bit leery of mil-surp, otherwise, I'd probably buy a bunch of Hirt. Opened up an ammo can of Rem buckshot that I inherited to discover that it had molded; at least I can salvage the brass cased Federal .223Rem bulk packs that had mold on the case, but the shotshells look hosed.

Any issues with the recent vintage of GGG 7.62x51?

Also, for the AR platform. While I'm not a big fan of the .223Rem / 5.56 round (something about the sound of it when firing that I just don't like), I do recognize the utility. Looking at a comparison between GGG, AMA-DENEX, and IWI in the 62grain class.

Thanks. I am embarrassed for having missed that :/ Guess my head is too wrapped up in work.

Could you describe this mold more? Are you sure its not surface corrosion or moldy boxes? Not seeing how plastic/metal can mold, unless you have some OLD paper shotshells.

That said, in mine (and others) experiences surplus ammo is just fine if stored correctly (it usually is). I don't know anything about GGG or Denex, but I'd feel fine with IWI (though not their/Federal's Independence brand). Also look at the Wolf GOLD and Prvi Partizan for good, cheap blaster ammo.

RE the mold:

On the Remington shells, it is around the folds of the crimp and, in some cases, spreads over the top of the shell and part-way down the side. It appears somewhat similar in appearance to downy/powdery mildew on plants. It is accompanied by the classic "musty smell" that molds tend to have.

With the .223Rem stuff, it's mostly a packaging only issue. Powdery white patches, which, when the powder is wiped off, leave an area of discoloration on the boxes. Ammo cans which held these smell overwhelmingly of that "musty smell."
