7.62x54 commercial rifle?

Vaarok, if there ever was a textbook definition of lust I exhibited it towards the '95 Winchester in 7.62x54R. A lever gun with a bayonet lug, how can you not love that?

Once at Cabelas I saw this Winchester lever gun with a giant receiver in x54r. It was pretty cool but around $1100 I believe.

Levergun with stripper clip guides and a bayonet lug. In 7.62x5R. I spent thirteen hundred dollars and it was worth every penny.

I was considering doing the 762X54 conversion for my Lee Enfield no4 MK1.... has anyone done this? Was it worth it? costs?

^That is a pretty neat idea, but I don't know that I could do that to a good LE that is already chambered for a good (albeit more costly) cartridge...a pre-butchered one, sure!

:)

^Sold, yes....Imported (at least post-Clinton), no. There are some here, but they are fairly costly (generally $3k+).

:)

Like Al said, I would like to see a Handi Rifle in 7.62x54r. I would snap that right up. I love shooting that cartridge in my M44, and just think it is a fun cartridge to shoot, period. Plus it's dirt cheap to shoot. I'd love to see it incorporated into the model 700 line.

Really I was at atlanticfirearms and they have some for sale, maybe they haven't change their catalog since Clinton... but here they are...
Those are PSLs, not a Tigr or Dragunov-SVD/NDM-86.

:)

I like the 7.62x54 round and the current economy of shooting it, but not a big Nagant fan. Anyone know of any commercial rifle currently made in this caliber?

I have to ask what it is about the Nagant you don't like. I could argue a Huber trigger and a turned down bolt handle would fix a great portion of the squabbles with the rifle and that would cost around $150. A new barrel and new stock would bring that total up if you just had to have something in 7.62x54R.

I figure all of the above to be a waste the good old 30-06 can be had in sooooo many flavor and frankly out performs it for nearly the same ammo cost (especially if you reload).

54r IMHO is better tha -06 by far, flatter trajectory, commercially MUCH cheaper, and can be had in steel core variants.

I'll give you the cheap ammo, but the 54R hasn't a flatter trajectory (the opposite is true) and '06 steel core is available. I really don't see how it is the "better" cartridge unless you put cost far above all else.

I just shot a 30-06 Saturday from a 22" barrel bolt action over a Chronograph. 150gr = 2900+-fps, 165gr, 2800+-fps, 180gr = 2700+-fps.

The 7.62x54R even with a 28" bbl obtains 2800fps+- with 147gr and 2500+-fps with a 180gr.

The shorter M44 20.5"bbl obtains 2600+-fps with 150gr & 2400+- FPS with 180Gr.

With a 28" barrel the 30-06 numbers would smoke the 7.62x54R. These are factory loads. Handloading may bridge the gap some, maybe.

There's a lot of confusion on that issue. .30'06 BALL ammo was never loaded to potential. Those rounds are on par with 7.62x54R and a little under 8x57JS levels, but very close. However, .30'06 has more capacity and can be amped up quite a bit beyond the realm of 54R. The light mag loads can reach the bottom end of .300 WM territory. But these are not for any unmodified Garand, of course. And you can get spam cans of 54R for a lot less than .30'06 surplus.

Those are the new Nodak spud builds I was talking about. I've handled them, but not shot them. I was very impressed, and found the machining and action to be better all around than the PSL parts guns that have been coming in recently. They have a square-back receiver made in the US and furniture made in the US. I have not heard many range reports on the new TGI builds, but the Nodak receivers get high marks. I can tell you my inner voice, honed through years of mil surp shooting, told me this particular kind of PSL was skookum. Others, not so much. I may buy one shortly to be the test dummy on them. Then I'll either curse my little voice or praise it.
