Can you park at the port of Miami and lock your gun in you car in a secured gun safe while taking a cruise? I talked to the port and was told yes but not if they go on higher alert. I am traveling so I have no where else to leave it. Do I have to pass through security to get to the parking area? I could use an off site lot, but they are not secure.

No, entry with a gun violates DHS regulations. Had to leave mine at home several times because of this.

There are big signs where you go to get to the parking lot saying "no weapons beyond this point"

Port of miami said OK on phone. We're on vacation 1500 miles from home so leaving it home is out of the question.

edknn, the Port of Miami is right next to downtown. Parking at the Federal Courthouse lot, or in the Omni at the US passport office (with Diplomatic Security) should be as "secure" as any lot in America. Both of these are pretty close to the port. Also, there are dozens of hotels where you could leave a "package" for yourself. There are also dozens of crew service mail drop/pack and ship type places that would also suit your purposes. If you are staying in a hotel overnight in Miami before departing on your cruise, you could probably just leave it in a suitcase with the bell stand. If nobody knows what is in the "package" nobody will care.

Would have to have left it home for the last 2 months as I've been out of state that long.

While I can't speak for Miami I can tell you what I did in Fort Lauderdale. We spent the night before departure at the Hilton Lauderdale Marina Hotel. They offered long term parking which was a better deal than the port and just about right across the street. Secure indoor parking so I left the truck there, with gun stashed in a locked secure case. Many of the better hotels offer parking for long term, even though you are not staying at the hotel. This way I avoided all the port BS. The hotel even had a shuttle service to and from the ship in the port. I am sure many of the better hotels in Miami offer secure parking much like Lauderdale. You may want to look into that option. All it takes is a phone call.

According to this, it looks like oneounceload is right.

The seaport must provide clear notice of the prohibition against possession of concealed weapons and other contraband material on the premises of the seaport. Any person in a restricted area who has in his or her possession a concealed weapon, or who operates or has possession or control of a vehicle in or upon which a concealed weapon is placed or stored, commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. This paragraph does not apply to active-duty certified federal or state law enforcement personnel or persons so designated by the seaport director in writing.

It looks like is was Florida statute 311.12 (7) but now falls under 311.12 (3)

311.1 (2) says:

All persons and objects in secure and restricted areas are subject to search by a sworn state-certified law enforcement officer, a Class D seaport security officer certified under Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 guidelines, or an employee of the seaport security force certified under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 guidelines.

I suppose that if it wasn't posted you'd be ok but this looks like the most recent brochure which also says that its not allowed:

"...They offered long term parking..." Probably far more secure too. The hotel assumes liability in the event you become the victim of a crime, as well.

Another option is to see if there is a branch of a bank you do business with and rent a safety deposit box for the shortest time available.

I would NOT use a pawn shop, because if you are from out of state, you won't be able to get your back in person - it will need to ship to an FFL in your state and you'll spend a lot on transfers and shipping and pawn fees.

Port of Miami has armed guards at the entry; you have to show your ship boarding passes to get past them and there are huge signs about guns and other contraband not being allowed.

Find a local gunsmith, have him check the gun over and clean it. No transfer paperwork required even if from out-of-state.

Is this your first cruise out of Miami port? I have cruised out of Miami many times. Parking at the port is the most expensive (but the most convenient since its right on the port).

I would suggest off-site parking at one of the many cruise parking lots around miami area. Buy a small vault for your firearm and secure it in your trunk. I have parked off-site numerous times with no issues. You will also save money this way. Off-site parking is about $8/day, while port parking is $20/day.

This is the parking I've used for the last 2 cruises. Free shuttle to/from the port (about a 20min ride).

Good luck and have fun on your cruise!

I got a reply from the head of security at the port saying it is completely legal to lock a gun in your car in the garage.

Good morning sir,

Based on the information you provided in this e-mail (see below) here are the steps we ask you to take:

1. You are prohibited from bringing the firearm into any cruise terminal as these are USCG approved restricted areas. Attempts to board a vessel with a firearm can produce serious consequences.

2. PortMiami has a large amount of designated USCG approved Secured Area/Restricted Areas and possession of any firearm is prohibited. Signage is posted and fencing is in place to delineate.

3. You will not have to pass through any security check points at PortMiami prior to entering any one of our parking garages.

4. If your find yourself at a checkpoint, you are probably lost. Simply ask staff at the checkpoint for directions.

5. Please note though the port is a relatively safe environment, though from time to time vehicles are broken into while parked in our parking garages.

6. Please secure your firearm safely in your vehicle before exiting.

Thank you and enjoy your cruise.

That hasn't been my experience going there. They asked us while in our car going through the lines to the parking area for our cruise for our passports and if we had any weapons (specifically guns). There were large signs with the red circle and slash through the pic of a gun.

When is the last time you were there? We did not have to show anything to gain entry to the areas that are vehicle accessible. We didn't show ID until walking into the terminal.

Must be a different parking area.

Ive already posted the current FL statute and Brochure for parking in the Restricted area that says No Weapons and you are subject to search.

They don't create statutes prohibiting it if its OK to do it.
They also don't create Brochures stating its prohibited if its OK to do it.

Being that we are on heightened terrorist watch, I doubt its less restrictive.

oneounceload, did you park in a "garage" or an "area"

The reason I ask is that you keep writing "area" and the OP keeps referring to a "garage" and noting the wording in #2 and #3 in post 16 from the OP.

We drove through an underwater tunnel, ended up on the island, drove next to garages and parked our car in a garage, just like the airport. We then walked to the secure area. No gated entry or anti gun signage to be seen until next to the secure area.

I think people are confusing the entry of miami's terminal with fort lauderdale's, which has a para military gate shack controlling entry.

They even let google's street view car onto the island if anyone wants to look at images of the port.

Both - depends on the cruise line

Sure you aren't getting Miami and Ft Lauderdale confused? My last visit to Ft Lauderdale had check points, Miami didn't. I wanted to make sure nothing changed and the reply from the head of security at Miami proved that.

At Ft Lauderdale, the whole port is restricted. The reply from Miami security stated restrictions were in the actual terminal building, not the garage or surface areas. I could pull right up to the terminal building, unload my luggage , then park. No security until you entered the actual terminal where you boarded the ship. Funny, 2 ports, miles away, and vastly different security standards.
