My first SKS!

Buy a sight adjusting tool. You'll most likely need it.

I have 6 SKS rifles:
Russ $150 + $12 FFL 1997
Yugo $90 +$12 FFL 2002

Albanian $90 +$12 FFL 2005
Albanian $90 +$12 FFL 2005

I have only shot the first Yugo in 2002.
I have not shot any since, but i did shoot a different Chinese often in the 1990s.

Be advised that any surplus Romanian 7.62x39 ammunition is almost certainly corrosive, so clean accordingly.
I'm guessing you're in Canada?

Do you guys shoot your SKS on the U battle sight setting? 0-300 yard point blank? Or do you use the 100 m rear sight notch?

I leave mine at 100. It seems to be on for any distance less than that, and I just kind of eyeball it for anything over that. I rarely shoot it past 100 yards anyway, maybe 150-200 yards maximum.

I found out the hard way that the "battle setting" is actually the same as the 300 meter zero, and at 100 yards it puts bullets well over your target. As I understand it, it was designed so that you can set your rifle to battle zero and get a center of mass hit on an enemy soldier at any distance from point blank to 300 yards by just aiming for his belt buckle. I don't have a source for that - if that's wrong please let me know.

Barrel and gas system. Use a water based cleaner to dissolve the salts.

I adjusted my frontsight so that the 1 mark on the rear leaf is 100m
