I was checking the handguns in my gun safe. Sometimes I just order guns and am not really aware of which types and brands of guns I seem to prefer. I have had about 60 guns pass through my hands in the last 5 1/2 years. Enough guns to get the attention of the ATF asked my LGS about me. He told them that although I buy a lot of guns, I trade most of them in and they know me for 5 years. It also helps that I liaison with several Federal Security Agencies and have background checks every few years.

My inventory of handguns shows that I prefer revolvers as the type of gun I buy most. I already knew that I prefer all metal guns over polymer. I grew up with metal guns and played with plastic guns as a child. Over the last 45 years I have used a lot of guns for various things. I have tried most brands of guns except for the new ones that popped up in the last few years like SCCY, DB, etc.. The brands I now own, I own due to their reliability compared to other brands in my personal experience over 4+ decades. Many guns are reliable if I just use them for range shooting a few times a year but when you put them to hard use like training courses and competition, you separate the men from the boys. I have found that saving money by buying an inexpensive gun, ends up costing me more in the long run when I sell it for a loss and replace it with another gun. How about you? What are your preferences? I know a few guys who will just list Striker fired, Glock and Polymer. I like to buy good examples of the top manufacturers.

Type of gun:

6 Revolvers
4 1911 style guns. SA with manual safety
4 Striker fired polymer guns
3 DAO pistols
1 DA/SA pistol

Material

12 All metal
6 Polymer

Brands

4 Sigs
4 S&W
3 Glocks
3 Rugers
1 Colt
1 HK
1 NAA
1 Springfield

I have been rather fond of Berettas and I also feel that all-metal pistols seem to be more confidence inspiring, and I tend to stay away from pocket guns and subcompacts. I have just bowed to the march of time, however and bought my first polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol. The list as of now is as follows:

1 revolver (because everyone has to have at least one), a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum. Built like a tank.

3 Berettas and one Stoeger Beretta clone: DAO Beretta mini-Cougar 9mm, Beretta mini-Cougar F .40 cal S&W, Beretta 92 FS 9mm, Stoeger Cougar F .45 cal ACP.

1 model 1911 (because everyone has to have one of those as well: Springfield Armory .45 cal ACP.

1 Walther (Umarex) P22 .22 LR. A true POS but good for training purposes.

Latest acquisition, a SIG Sauer P320 full-size in .45 cal ACP.

I rarely carry my LCP, choosing my Colt XSP instead. However, I have a Veridian Laser sight on its way to me and I will use the LCP as my nighttime pocket gun. My eyes are not what they used to be due to age, so I have been gradually putting lasers on my carry guns and getting holsters for the various gun/laser combinations.

My LCP will be getting some attention soon. It is the 4th one I have bought but the only one that I kept longer than 6 months. I can hit a bullseye at 7 yards with it and have proven that to others who insist that the sights on their LCP are crooked. :) The only reason I have not been carrying it is because I cannot see the sights in dim light. That will change soon.

My first semi was a Beretta, the one James Bond used to carry in his early career. When he switched to the PPK, so did I. Back in the early 70's, in Texas, semi autos were not as popular as revolvers. Everyone liked a 1911 but they did not reliably feed hollow points without work being done on them. A .357 was considered a real man's gun.

I had a 92FS but found the grip to big for my hands. It was a good shooting gun that never jammed but I did not like the grip and I was getting rid of my DA/SA guns at the time. I also like Walthers but do not own any of them either. Don't know why though.

The 92 FS does have a fat grip. It was a little thicker than ideal for me and I have moderately large mitts. A pair of low profile VZ grips and a Wilson Combat short reach trigger made a significant difference.

I lean towards the older S&W and Colt Revolvers. I also have several of the older Colt Government MK IV Series 70 1911 type guns. Then a few 22 LR target pistols to sort of round things out. Something I have been waiting on to come along is a minty Colt Government Series 70 chambered in 9mm, I have one in 38 Super. Anyway, I like the older all metal flavors over the newer guns. Then too, I am older so there may be some bias there. :)

I own more autos, I carry more autos, but interestingly I'd say I shoot my revolvers quiet a bit more, I know I enjoy them more.

I'll tell the wife I need to rectify the situation by acquiring more revolvers. :D

I also own more polymer pistols than steel, but I much prefer the steel.
Probably a result of having so many carry options, I'll take the poly for carry and the steel to shoot and enjoy.

I view guns first as tools; that means I'm looking for reliable, accurate guns that can be user-maintained at little cost. Personal preference also means one type of trigger pull, in a service caliber, with affordable magazines and accessories. Something that I won't care if it shows wear or gets knocked around. Glocks it is.

That aside, I don't see an advantage to listing out a collection on the internet. It contains a bit of this and that, more semis than wheel guns, but a bit of what's available across the full range (heh).

I am glad i can view them as tools AND a hobby I enjoy and designs i can appreciate.

Guns can be tools. They can also be so much more
