Used 4" .45 LC Redhawks are popping up on gunbroker, so when I buy mine next April (wife and i agreed to no more than two guns a year given I own over two dozen), I'll eitherr get one of the NIB .45LC/.45ACP revolvers or get a used .45 LC at a good price and get it machine for moon clips.

What I've been able to read about them, is that they function best (as far as accuracy) at the higher end of the pressure scheme in .44 magnum ranges with rounds like Buffalo Bores 260 grain JHP that does a little over 1300 fps.

I've only got one Super Redhawk in .454 and I've thought about sending it off for a moon clip conversion. If I find another .454 for $600 or less out my way, I'll be sending it off to pinnacle to have it trimmer to 6" and a moon clip conversion.

But I might just say forget it and get the .45LC/.45ACP.

I bought a 4 inch 45 Colt redhawk earlier this year. It was in embarrassingly bad condition for being a NIB gun. Ruger apparently felt that because it was a brushed stainless gun that dents, scratches and dings all over it didnt matter. I sent it back to the place I ordered it from. All of my other Ruger stainless revolvers have excellent finishes. Really made me think twice about Rugers QC.

Yes, a greater shooter. 45 Auto feels like (in my hands) .38 wadcutter from a 3" GP100/ 4" K frame. Standard velocity/pressure Colt loads are similar to 1911 Government model target/practice loads from Winchester and Federal FMJ 230 grain.

It's been getting worse at Ruger. I've heard dealers say they've had to send back GP100's because their timing was off or the hand was busted.

It's starting to come to the point with manufacturers that buying used is as good as buying new.

I was under the impression that current GP100s are actually better than the old ones in terms of fit and finish. A few lemons does not mean Ruger DA revolvers are going downhill, by absolutely no means.

To those with the .45 ACP/.45 Colt Redhawk, how do the wood grips feel? Are they comfortable? They look kind of small in the pictures.

The small grips are comfortable, till you get up into heavy-bruiser .45 Colt power levels, at which point they are not. :)

To finish testing on one here I had to put bigger Hogues on it.

I see! I would love to first some Buffalo Bore .45 Colt +P "Deer Grenades" in this gun. Talk about thump!!! :what:

The fact that this one gun can shoot this and much less expensive .45 ACP ball ammo is one of the reasons why the commas in by bank statement don't hang around for long, Ruger is going to make me a broke man!! :D

Another referral to the Kindle book via Amazon on the model.
Which addresses both the grips and the Deer Grenade, among other Buffalo Bore loads. :)

You may take a while to find a factory ACP load that shoots well in the gun.

I bought one.... and then was immediately pissed off at Ruger over it. In typical Ruger fashion, it ONLY uses Ruger's moon clips. No-go on the piles of clips I use with my Colt's and Smiths even though the chamber spacing is the same... heck, the Ruger clips don't work in my other revolvers either...

I gave Ruger their scout rifle mag BS once they got a cheap version on the market, but seriously $14.95 + shipping for THREE clips!? Really!? You can get ten from Wilson Combat plus a de-mooning tool for that much...

The supplied clips from Ruger are not even very good... Knocked a loaded one off my desk and it bent badly enough to be ruined, steel was butter soft. Makes them easy to load and unload by hand, but bending from a drop of maybe three feet tops isn't acceptable.

Nice gun overall but being already invested in other .45 ACP revolvers the moon clip incompatibility soured the gun for me. :banghead:

well I think i'll just save and buy the ruger Blackhawk convertible in 45c/45acp I feel this one with 5 1/2in barrel would be all I need!! and maybe a better pistol than this new one that's out!

The Ruger-only clips are necessary to allow BOTH calibers to be fired in one cylinder.
Quite a different set-up than the Smiths & you shouldn't expect Smith clips to work in the Ruger.

The Ruger clips are also thinner, again to accommodate the way the cylinder's machined.
Denis

S&W Governor; .45 Colt and .45 ACP while still using the same full-moon clips that have been in circulation since WWI. Private smiths have been doing the same modification for decades to other makes and models of 45s.

Thickness isn't the isue either, its the OD. The ruger clip is about a 32nd smaller than a standard full-moon. Maybe the safety ninnies didn't want to take another .032 off the cylinder face?

Rugers engineers had their reasons.

I'm just pointing out why Smith clips don't work in the Ruger, the rear of the cylinder's machined differently than a Smith & Colt ACP revolver.
Denis

That, I found, was a very nice feature of the clips.
Denis

Why would Ruger go out of their way to accommodate S&W clips? Is that all we can really find to complain about??? How many moon clips can you buy for the $150 it would've cost you to have the cylinder machined for the purpose?

How many Rugers have you owned? I've bought 39 Rugers and currently own 25. Do you know how many I've had issues with since I got my first 25yrs ago? One. And its issue wouldn't have been caught by QC, unless they're measuring firing pin protrusions.

How was the timing off? Ruger's habit of putting an early rising bolt in everything just about precludes any timing issues out of the box.

About the steel in the moon clips being soft, if someone here could do a Rockwell hardness test on them compared to the S&W clips, I'm sure all of us here would be interested to hear which steel is harder.
