Recently came into possession of several hundred 45acp cartridges. They are Berdan primed (much to my chagrin) with a small pistol primer. They are FN 57 cartridges. The primers have died. I've decided I can use the bullets and have started pulling them. I have a bullet puller that I purchased from Midway eons ago. The rubber gasket around the collet, if that would be the proper name, is starting to loosen or expand. It's not tight. I called Midway and they were quite willing to sell me a set of new collets. The collets are fine. It's the rubber bands that are stretched. They referred me to Battenfeld Tech which is the parent company of Frankford Arsenal. They more or less told me to take a hike, for lack of a more descriptive phrase. Second question. Can anybody think of a use for the cases from which the bullet has been extracted. It tears at my soul to just throw these away.
Any and all information or opinions will be gratefully accepted.

Take a collet to an auto parts store, or hardware, and buy a rubber O-Ring that fits it.

Cases are scrap metal.

Go to the hardware store or home depot and get rubber o-rings, they are found in the hardware or plumbing sections.

I'd just scrap the brass.

Just curious, how do you know the primers are bad?

I've seen some pretty old cartridges fire.

Rubber 'O' rings aren't terribly hard to come by. Home Depot or any other hardware store will have 'em. Mind you, a brand new kinetic puller runs $14.99 for Midway.
"...a use for the cases..." The primers are very likely corrosive and not replaceable. Pop 'em in a revolver(assuming you have one. They're highly unlikely to have died either), make some drawer pulls and pitch the rest. Berdan primed brass is not worth worrying about.

You can find the rubber O-rings at most well supplied hardware stores, they are cheap. Take one with you as they come in many many many sizes.

Thank you all for the info. I never, never, never thought about going to home depot or an auto parts store. I've got to start thinking out of the box. Wait... I've got to start thinking. You know, at this rate I could run for political office.

Berdan Primed? Dump 'em as it ain't worth the extra effort.
Plus side? Go to your local range and pick up ALL the boxer primed .45 auto empties that you desire.

Yeah, Lowes, Home Depot, about any hardware or home improvement store. You want rubber O Rings. Literally a few cents each. Buy several for each size collet and you will be good for years till they either break or dry out. :)

Using shell holders comes with the risk of a plastic pipe bomb in your face if a round goes off.

The collets are designed to release the case and let the pressure out of the hammer if one goes off.

A shell holder in the way locked in place leaves nowhere for the pressure to escape.

Don't do it!!

M thanks to all who suggested Home Depot. Went there this AM and got them. I never would have thought of that and apparently neither did the folks at Midway or Frankford Arsenal (Battenfeld).

Now that you have learned how to think and take good advice, you are no longer qualified for public office.
