Everyone knew Black Friday would be a huge sales day for firearms among other things, but this puts it in a nice Patriotic perspective.

FTA:
According to the FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said Black Friday shattered the single-day record for gun sales – with 185,345 background checks processed in a 24 hour period.

The number breaks down to slightly more than two background checks per second, or enough firearms to arm each of the 182,000 active duty members of the United States Marine Corps.

The FBI says you can't use a 1 to 1 correlation but since you can have several firearms (up to 30 long guns if I remember), its a safe enough bet. From someone who spent a lot of time in a gun shop, I've seen people purchase more than 1 gun on a single form far more times than someone fill out a form and not buy anything (whether it was getting denied or any other reason).

Keep up the good work my fellow Americans! ;)

As much as I love guns and believe in the duty of adult Americans to be responsible for the protection of their families and themselves I have the unsettling belief that the large amount of gun purchases are a mainly a result of citizens not feeling safe.

However the more gunowners the more difficult it is to pass more restrictive gun laws.

I am curious how many of those sales were to first time gun owners? Or as gifts to first time owners? Are we adding new owners or are we just adding more guns? I'm all about adding guns so don't take this question wrong I was just curious if these stats even exist?

Exactly. I'm happy to see more purchases because it means it is that much harder to take them away.

It won't be long before we break 400 million firearms in the U.S. That's a lot that can be buried, hidden, stored away. And we've hardly dipped our toe in home 3D metal printers. :D

There's no stats because, think about it, whenever you do a form you don't answer those questions except to maybe a curious individual.

My money would be mostly on existing gun owners adding to their collection, followed by gifts. Although my home state of Maine is a good example, where we just enacted Constitutional Carry where you don't need a permit to conceal carry, and a lot of people have been buying handguns for that (and still signing up for training, magine that).

Obama wins firearms salesman of the year again in 2015, seven years in a row, what a guy!

Who was that famous WWII Japanese Admiral who said something like: "its suicide to invade America, there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass".

If they can't do anything about 10 million illegal aliens ho do they propose to do anything about 400 million lawfully owned firearms?

I assume that number also doesn't include firearms bought online on black Friday since the background checks won't be completed until the buyer goes to pick up from his local FFL. Given some of the deals I saw online, I bet the actual number of purchases is much larger.

Wally - Admiral Yamamoto was credited with that quote but it skeptical that he actually said it. (Doesn't stop me from having it on my desktop background on my laptop).

Gtscotty - You are correct, it is only the NICS checks so basically that's only in store purchases. :)

First good news I've heard all week. :D

Thanks!

It's usually misattributed to Admiral Yamamoto. There's no record he or anyone else ever said it.

I can't speak for anyone else but, I bought 5 on BF to give as gifts for grandkids.
And no, the stats can't exist. That's one reason that I did it this way.

Mine is a "Cyber Monday" sale. Wondering how that will add to the mix. :)
That statistic is only for those who did their background checks in the stores on Black Friday, so everyone like you and me who ordered one but didn't pick it up at their local FFL isn't counted, so the actual count is much higher but can't really be accurately tracked.
