Was unloading the truck tonight after spending a day at the range and just getting ready to close the garage and heard some very loud screams in the woods behind my neighbors house across the street. I figure it must have been some kind of animal as it was moving extremely fast through the woods (way too fast for a human). Anyhow, I managed to pick up 3 of the screams before it got too far away to hear any longer. I've been hunting for over 50 years and have only heard this type of scream once and that was on a deer hunt down on the NC border over 20 years ago. Anyone have an idea what this might be? Thanks!

Forgot to mention you may need to turn up volume to hear this as the screams were off in the distance.

Probably cats mating.

Bobcats to be specific.

They will make the hair stand up on your neck after dark.

Agree with RC, most likely a bobcat. I've heard foxes can make the screaming sound also but I've never actually witnessed that.

Wow, that's super creepy. I'd hate to hear that while trying to dress a deer, or walk out of the woods in the dark. I've never heard bobcats scream in person, although I'd heard it was a blood curdling sound. I guess now I'll know if I ever hear something like that.

The foxes are going nuts up here lately. We were getting dispatched twice a week for reports of women screaming in the parks. I had one let it rip about 10 yards from me one night. That was.....interesting.

First time I heard this I thought I was going to finally meet Bigfoot. I normally head to my deer stand about an hour before daybreak. There was a hard frost that morning and the woods were dry. I had just sat down and was pouring a cup of coffee when this animal started screaming like this one tonight. It must have spooked some deer or a bear as something ran by my stand making all kinds of noise. After that I headed back to my truck and waited for the sun to come up before heading back into the woods.

That would be much more meaningful if we knew where 'up here' is???

Up here on Florida, or up here in Canada?

I was eating an apple in my kitchen last night when from under my deck I heard a screeching "help" three or four times. Grabbed my gun, flashlight and cell phone and ran out the front door to the rear of the house. Scarred those two cats off in no time. It was a hair raising sound.

I live on a creek and the sound a mountain lion makes can curl your toes. It sounded like a little girl screaming. Supposedly there are no mountain lions around according to wildlife and parks (except for the ones getting caught on trail cams)

Screech owls are fun too. First time I heard one I thought it was someone driving around whistling for their dog in the middle of the night.

Heard some strange noises from Blue herons being attacked by owls down on my land.

Sounds like these are very close to the point when it's common to open fire first and resort to posthumous species identification...

Besides being nearly deaf and all, I thought is was a fox "bawl". After hearing the youtube vid, I'm almost certain it's a fox.

Anecdotally, the first time I'd heard a fox call like that, it really scared me. Squirrel hunting had lost all fun and became an immediate run for survival.

I heard a cottontail scream like a baby when a weasel jumped on it's back and started sucking the blood out. Needless to say I put the rabbit out of it's misery, with a quick chop behind it's ears, the weasel got away. Quite an earie sound.

When I was a kid, I would always hear what sound like babies crying in the dark. it really spooked me but my dad told me that they were just cats.

Either way, anythng that makes that sound in the dark like that will get me scared.
