I have the black hard rubber/plastic grips. I dont mind them just wish they were a little wider. Has any installed some kind of spacer to make them wider?
Might be cheaper than new grips
Thanks

I have not tried it but see no reason why it couldn't be done. Depending on thickness you might have to get a longer grip screw.

Spacing out the grips is going to move the "square edges" that fit against the upper frame out where they can eat into your hand. You may find that you are better off with new grips that are fatter up around the neck.

Also the stock grips are already a bit "fat" around the butt of the frame. So any spacers you get are going to want to be more of a wedge shape. As such I'd suggest that the optimum option if you are looking at gluing on a spacer is to shape the spacer such that it tapers from thicker at the top to thinner at the butt end. This will likely mean that you need to fiddle around with the screw and the insert in the other side to adjust for the angle. It's something you could do at the same time you're drilling the holes a touch deeper to let you stick to using the same screw and insert.

I don't see why you couldn't do this with some black micarta, perhaps with some thin knife scales. Although you might be better off having some new grips made.

All good points. The factory grips are too narrow at the top but perhaps just right at the bottom. What is best is to remove a lot of that flare at the bottom. I suppose you could fashion a tapered spacer but with the effort involved, new grips would be the better option.

I had the same problem, those cheese grater suck. I ended up getting some rosewood stocks from here http://www.handgungrips.com/Blackhawk_=_Ruger/1598/c/3070
Ref#3277 they are much better than the factory stocks, hope this is helpful.

Salmoneye, those are beautiful. You've inspired me to try doing some myself. What stain did you use?

Thanks for the kind words...

All I used was Boiled Linseed Oil...

I sanded to 800 grit, and then oiled maybe 10 coats of BLO with 4/0 steel wool in between...

They'd be shiny if I put them on the buffing wheel, but I like them 'dull'...
