Hold my beer and think about this

Hodgdon shows a max of 19 gr with a 300 grain XTP creating a pressure just under the SAAMI max of 40,00 CUP. Hard to figure what another 5 gr of H110/W296(over 20%) will create.....

No one with Quickload to run the numbers on this?
I would, but it's kind of meaningless IMO if one is not starting with actual case capacity and actual case length.

QL confirmed for me some suspicions that a long-used max load of W-W 231 was bumping up beyond spec pressures when I seated some a bit shorter (.06 I think) for use in a certain handgun with different ejection port dimensions. It predicted pressures slightly over SAMMI at that depth and velocity...with correct case capacity etc. factored in.

Not too hard for me to imagine. Pineapple grenade held at full arm extension seems only slightly more violent and destructive....and this is coming from a guy shooting 9mm hollow bases in .357 loads to jack it up even more.

Don't blow yourself up.

I understand not being able to determine exact initial internal capacity of the case, but there has to be an 'average' value for a .44 Mag case, no?

No way to at the very least take a Hodgdon data max load of H110 and the 300gr XTP at 1.6" COL, and then calculate the same charge with the COL at 1.75" to see what this does to max pressure?

Then for giggles, plug in the charges bandied about in the OP (@1.75")...

I'm sure the default values in QL are averages derived from some data set.

But I keep my grins & giggles from using that stuff to myself. Would hate to have someone whose gun/case/chamber/bore diameter combo was NOT average run into trouble by acting as if their stuff was average.

I'm not known for good decisions but I am leaning towards the "go buy a .460" route. This is not a guarantee I'll do the sane and reasonable thing. There's too much history to the contrary.

A - I like your sense of humor!

B - As the owner of a .460 (and a bunch of 44's, 357's, 41's, 45's etc)...I think you'll really dig the .460 S&W. You have a ton of room to explore from low end 45 colt loads to high end 460 mag loads. It's a lot of ground to cover with one gun.

Have fun and send us pics of the .460!

Years ago I worked up to 27.gr of 296 for a 240gr cast bullet in my Redhawk. I didn't shoot a lot of them. Then they came out with the 454 Casull, and I bought one. 24gr is my load for a 240gr bullet in .44 now. If that ain't enough, i'll use a bigger gun rather than a bigger powder charge.

This just in:

1) my kids got me a gift cert at the local range for a S&W 500 & a box of ammo
2) I am more interested in the .460 which the range doesn't rent, but this here's free
3) Thanks to everybody for sharing their experiences (OMG, 27 grains under a 240 - BOOYAH, that reminds me of the feeling I had when I set fire(small one) with my chemistry set to my parents bathroom. This was many, many years ago and it took my father much less time to put out the fire than he spent making sure I'd never do anything like that again in HIS house

Okay, I'll Look at "Averages"

Caving in today...

QuickLOAD with the averages/defaults and a seating depth of 1.60 predicts the 22.5 gr H110 load at more than 8,000 PSI over SAAMI spec.

Putting OAL at 1.734 as is reported as Pearce's length, the predicted pressure drops all the way down to about 30,500.

90% of max is 32,400 PSI.

95% of max is 34200 PSI.

QL predicts with these defaults it would take 23.4 gr of H110 to hit 34,200 or so PSI. If my barrel + cylinder number is correct, it would go 1,350 fps and generate close to 1,225 ft-lbs energy from a 6-inch revolver. Wow!

FWIW, your mileage may vary, and don't anyone rely on this!

so I put on my big boy pants and went from hodgdon's start load to 23.5 grains 0.1 grains at a time. The redhawk handled it well and they were all startlingly accurate even though POI did creep up a bit at 15yds. Much fun and I still have all my fingers & eyes. May never repeat this as #1 son is starting to talk about buying a .500 mag. The deal is if the old man reloads, he shoots 4 free.
