Has anyone bought a police trade in from Buds Gun Shop? The one I am considering is a m&p 40. Reviews sound fairly positive with dim to dead night sights and dirty but ok otherwise. Just looking to see if anyone has dealt with them on a police trade in and how the deal worked out.

Thanks

Look on Slickguns.com. Some days there are several. Some are un issued and less money than Buds. Many 40's are coming in now, some with the PD dept. Logo or Initials on them, "which doesn't bother me". And many times you can get a brand new gun with good NS for a nice savings from stores who advertise there , like Kentucky or Lambo's, also Summit has Police turn ins quite often.

I have bought a police trade in M&P 45 from them in the past. It had issues cycling when I first received it but after a detail strip and cleaning it worked great. It was full of gunk and more worn than I had expected, but still not a bad deal. I will say that if I could go back I would probably have bought a new one instead though.

Bud's

I bought both a 40C and a 40. Both are A-1. The 40C has very light holster wear on the slide lock but shows very little signs of being fired. The full sized looks brand new except for dead night sights. I highly recommend Bud's for a police trade in. The have lowered their prices on some models since I got mine. I would buy more just to have them but my budget won't allow it.

For the price you pay, it isn't worth it.

A relatively new/used gun is typically very close to these prices.

Yeah, they do seem a little high-priced. For 300-400 dollars you can buy a brand-new Turkish clone that will shoot all day long reliably.

Yeah, but for four bills you can get an un-issued, proven M&P with good factory night sights and three mags ... And for those concerned about quality rather than saving a few bucks, some of these police trade-ins are excellent deals ... I've scored two nice police trade-in SIG P-226s with night sights for not much more than some budget "Turkish clone" with cheap three-dot sights ...

I also recommend Bud's. OP, check out the recent thread from the guy who, like me, got a nice Detroit PD-marked M&P-40.

Agree 100% with Wildcat. Many new guns are very affordable right now.

I assume we're talking about the several varieties of police trade-in M&P that Bud's has currently.

If you're looking at an unissued model (which Bud's seems to always sell for $399), I agree that you may as well buy new. You'll need to replace the sights and pay for a smith to install them, and there's your hundred bucks for a brand new gun anyway.

If you're going with an issued gun, you can sometimes get those as cheap as $330 or so. Yeah it's a used gun, but with that route, you're actually saving money, even after replacing sights. I guess it all comes down to, how much do you wanna save 50-75 bucks?

This was $299 last week at Bud's retail store in Lexington:

It appears to be unfired. The night sights are dated 09 and are bright. It also has the cute little bear:

If you could be sure of getting a deal on real nice one like the one Elkins45 posted above, then i'd go with Buds.(and yeah, the bear is kinda cool! :D)
Otherwise, I'd check your local Armslist. I see M&P's come up pretty frequently, and you'd get to inspect it in person before buying.
Plus, no waiting for a week+ for it to arrive, nor any of the Chinese firedrill with your FFL.

Yeah, but that $300-400 can also get you a proven platform for which parts, accessories, and service are all inexpensive and readily available.

I picked up a police trade-in 3rd gen Glock 19 with bright Glock night sights for $399 about 2 years ago. After replacing the springs for a few bucks (a preventative measure) and ditching the horrible NY1 trigger spring, I had a pistol that was practically brand new.

If in a year or two I decide I don't like my M&P I can post it on Armslist and get pretty close to 100% of my investment back. I don't think the same can be said for a Turkish clone.

Good point!

If you are OK with a clunker of a 1911 clone from Turkey-Yes you can get a Tisa brand new with one magazine for $350. There is nothing wrong with one of these if you want 45ACP with a very heavy trigger and questionable sights by all means buy one or how ever many you want.I was looking for a modern polymer pistol, that is American made and highly supported by Smith & Wesson. I already owned a M & P 9 and an M & P 45 and love the M & P platform. I took a chance and got a 40-C from Buds and got a weapon that was basicly brand new with 2 brand new in the plastic magazines.I liked it so well that I also bought a full sized pistol that was even better. It had 3 brand new unused mags and appeared unfired. I think I got an unissued weapon with the 3 backstraps plus a sample fired cartridge with the waxed
paper still there just like a new one. My total cost for the M & P full sized was $349 minus $125 for a trade in was $224. At that price I could not afford to pass it up.

No experience with the M&P police trades, but have been very happy with other S&W police trade ins from Buds.

I've never ordered a police trade-in online but I have bought a G17 and M&P9 trade-in in the past. Both were practically brand new. The M&P9 had all backstraps, 3 magazines, and night sights dated less than 1 year old all for $299. Good deals are available if you are willing to look.

Buds will not post bad reviews. They also change reviews because the person posting can not edit or delete them.

Not true. They post all reviews. You can click on the lowest reviews and they show them all. Have you ever bought from Bud's? It is obvious that you have not. Read the rules. I have and you should too. Trolling on THR is not kosher. Remember-Shipping is included with the price at Bud's.

I have bought from Bud's two or three times and all were positive experiences. But FWIW, I have also read accusations by people claiming that Bud's deleted their negative feedback.

Well I went for it and bought a m&p 40 stamped Vermont State Police. Im sure glad I did because the gun looks almost new and night sights work great. Looks as clean as the one posted above with the bear stamped on it. Great deal for the price. I guess I got lucky and got one of the good ones.

If it hasn't already been mentioned AimSurplus and CDNN also have good LEO trade in sales from time to time.

Yeah, but can you call the manufacturer on the phone and have them send you a part, for free? (as I've done with S&W more than once).
Or have them ship it back to them, on their dime ? (as I've done once with S&W).
I have a buddy with a Turkish CZ clone, and it's a solid pistol, but it's highly unlikely it'll come with the same customer support as a S&W. Nor will it have the same re-sale potential.
Also, there is generally no significant difference in a lightly used pistol, and a brand new one, other than cost.
Whenever I score a used pistol off Armslist, I actually prefer to hear that it's had 2-300 rounds through it, rather than it's never been fired, or just had 1 or 2 mags through it. As far as I'm concerned, that's just a few break-in dollars that somebody ELSE spent. ;)
