this may need to be in the Legal Section but not sure.....please move if needed.

I have my recently received my concealed weapons permit and I travel via motorcycle quite frequently. My son plays college baseball and this spring I plan on traveling as much as possible to see him play. Weather permitting, I'll ride my motorcycle, which has hard locking saddle bags. With that said the saddle bags could be broken into easily if someone wanted to get in.

All the states I'll be traveling to honor my permit however I'm assuming I cannot take my firearm into a college stadium. Generally speaking, the games I'll be attending are 3 game series which mean they play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Friday's I generally arrive at the game first and then check into a hotel afterwards. I check out Sunday morning and then attend the game that afternoon before heading home.

FWIW, college baseball games are generally low key, attendance is generally low and there is a lot of room to move around.

What would you do with your firearm in this scenario? Lock it up in the saddlebags and hope for the best? Leave it at home and hope for the best?
 
*****Re-reading what you posted. check on that states laws.

Magnetic Tank bag is what I used to use all the time. (I stopped ridding) But I would likely leave it in the hotel if your going to a game.. Just leave the "do not disturb" sign out...

Don't assume. Find what the law says (handgunlaw.us is usually a good place to start). There's enough states where its legal to carry at sporting events and schools that its worth cecking, and I've never seen metal detectors at smaller college baseball games...

If you put it in your bags, I'd make sure no one sees you do it, or at least that they don't know it's a gun (maybe have it in a tank bag and move the tank bag to one of your locking painers). Colleges tends to have a lot of thefts so be careful.
 
My 9 years in the job, I've yet to investigate or hear about a burglary from a motorcycle. I'm sure it's happened but my guess to the low number of reports is probably due to the low number of motorcycles out there.

Check with campus pd, they may be able to hang on to it for you. I'm assuming your son lives on campus?

Yeah they generally take the entire thing... Motorcycle theft has been going up and up and up...

good idea about the Do Not Disturb sign.........

I usually check in after the Friday game and check out before the Sunday game. Thats my dilemma......

Security is almost non-existent at a college baseball game and you are correct, there are no metal detectors at all. I will check with the Universities beforehand, I'd love to stick it in a pack and just carry it in concealed.

Great idea about campus PD. He lives off campus however however this is mainly for away games traveling around the Southeast......
 
In most states`

It is even unlawful to be in the parking lot with your weapon. School grounds.

Check the law, don't ask the campus police unless you want them to tell you no. Like most cops and businesses, there's a very good chance that they either won't know the law or won't care and just say "gun? Nope, can't do that" in which case now they know to look for a guy on a motorcycle carrying a gun to baseball games.

Don't do anything illegal, but don't make it easy for them to tell you that you can't carry.
 
Dang, these different state laws are crazy ridiculous confusing. Most state laws (which I will be in) say that a non-student adult can possess a firearm in their vehicle on a University's parking lot, which is good news.

What I can't find is whether or not I can drop the magazine, leave the mag(s) locked on the motorcycle and then carry the unloaded firearm in to a baseball stadium concealed in a tank bag. I'm not concerned about safety, I just don't want my gun to get stolen...
 
Depends on what you ride. They steal the Harleys but Wings and other pure road bikes not so much. If you are riding a Harley clone maybe not such a good idea. I have never had my saddle bags broken into in 80,000 + miles of riding a Yamaha.
 
The hard bags on my Harley lock. I often leave a handgun locked in them. Sure, you can bust the bag with a hammer or easily remove it from the bike and take the bag or smash it open on the pavement. However, I have put almost 100k miles on the current bike often leaving it in motel parking lots, shopping centers and big venues. No one has bothered it yet.
 
"Gone in 60 Seconds"? How about 30 seconds? I've seen a surveillance video of 4 guys jumping out of a van, each pair sticking a length of 2x4 through the spokes in each wheel, each grabbing an end, and lifting and dumping the bike into the van. In less than 30 seconds they were gone.

I don't leave anything on a bike, and after a spill 3 years ago where rolling a few times with a cell phone in my front pocket smashed the phone and beat the heck out of my leg, I don't carry while I ride.
 
I find this much like the truck gun debate. I use one of those cable attached lock boxes in hard and soft panniers. Wrap cable around the frame and notch hard bag to accommodate cable.
It's not perfect but there isn't much else one can do with valuables on a bike.
Make sure you look at the individual laws for each state or local, you will be surprised at some of the places your restricted from and the whoops you need to jump through.
 
I can assure everyone that people will steal stuff off a parked motorcycle. Maybe not a Yamaha (probably not worth taking...), but they will off a Honda. :D

Good advice! I'll add that (from the looks of many comments here) you very well may be surprised at some of the places you CAN carry without breaking the law.

If it is legal to keep your firearm with you, DO SO. If you cannot, a cable-secured lock box inside the pannier is a very reasonable and simple aid in doing all you can to balance physical security against gun theft.

+1. In many states, guns are permitted on the grounds of campuses, but not inside of the buildings. I assume a stadium would be considered the same as a building, but I don't know. I ride, CWC and have a son that goes to college. When we visit him on the bike and go into the dorm or other buildings, the gun is locked(with a cable) in the saddlebags. My son shoots sporting Clays @ school and leaves his shotgun locked in the trunk of his car or takes it to the Campus Police Building where they will keep it for him.
 
Thanks for all the replies and opinions..........I think my best option if i can't check in a hotel beforehand is to discreetly lock the gun in the saddle bags preferably with a small locking case with a cable, which I do have in one of my vehicles.
 
I ride and carry and I only carry IWB. On the rare occasions that I want to go into a bar (prohibited place) while I'm on the road I find a discreet spot nearby where there doesn't seem to be anyone watching, unholster the gun, and lock it under the seat. Then ride back to the bar. Having three or four riding buddies gather around also creates enough cover for this operation, and my buddies usually need to do the same thing with their guns. It's loaded but is "in a locked vehicle and out of sight" so it's legal in my state. If you need to leave your gun with your bike I would do the same thing, but just put the gun in a locking hard bag. I don't like the idea of being slowed down by lock boxes or cables if I need the gun when returning to the bike. Same goes for my cages, when I leave a gun in one it's just stashed out of sight, not locked up in any way. Attacks on people returning to their vehicles are really common. I'm willing to risk losing my carry gun to a vehicle break-in as a trade-off for instant access. Both of my cages also have high end paging alarm systems.
 
I saw a gun concielment/lockbox built into a floorboard on a bagger they have a waterpeoof hinge and a lock. It looked secure enough,but slow to access. I have not tried one,but its out there, and it might work...
 
and now another problem, I guess I might not be able to end up in western NY over the summer riding my motorcycle from the south carrying a Glock on my trip...........researching all these different state laws is nuts and I feel for the fine folks that live in NY State. You guys need new politicians. Any chance in the future these non-recpricating laws will be repealed?
