22 fun/range rifle

I had to vote "other"....

Mainly because my Remington 572 slide-action is my favorite. It has been with me since 1972, IIRC. Never scoped, it has been deadly on ground squirrels and prairie dogs out to 100 yards or so. Nearly as fast as a semi-auto when need be. It is a pleasant afternoon when my son and I use it to shoot up a brick of Eley Target ammo!

Lever for fun; bolt for range; semi-auto for if you've got a large amount of ammo that you want to get rid of.

Single shot?

I like my old Winder musket. Fun, accurate, rifle. A classic.

I'll go with the Marlin or the Browning in a 22LR levergun.
Plastic and painted parts have no place on a levergun that I own.

I like my S&W M&P 15-22 and I recently purchased a Ruger American compact. Both shoot very well and Monday,I tried out a Leupold VX! scope 3x9x40 on the Ruger. I needed ten shots to zero it at 25yds.

Tube mag lever for me - specifically Marlin if possible.

Semi-auto .22's in general leave me cold, but most especially if they too, do not have a tube mag.

Loading detachable mags - most particularly Ruger - is a detractor for me when fun is the goal.

Bolts are cool enough and I love my Glenfield and my Springfield M-2 but short stroke .22 bolts are still weird to me even after all these years.

Nah, jack a lever, play with hammers, nearly always as slim as possible... Gimme a good lever rimmer any ol' day over the other platforms for "fun".

My Remington 510P is one of my favorites as well as the first gun I owned. One pill at a time.



Given a choice I like my older bolt guns over the semi-automatics I have like the Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60. I also like the older 22 pump and lever guns.

Ooh... Pumps - slides - whatever... I forgot about them.

Don't currently own one but you're dead on - their fun factor is right up there with a lever for me.

I have a passel of .22 rifles. I usually take 3-4 at a time to enjoy them all occasionaly. Winchester 74's. Marlin 39A, Marlin 56, Ruger 10-22, Marlin 60, and so on....Lots of .22 rifles made in the 50's and 60's are or have been a bargain to buy for 75-200 until recently. Lots of times you could find a safe queen bolt, single shot, or semiauto that can be a lot of fun. My Henry's are modern but also a lot of fun.

While I have a tricked out 10/22 semi-auto, my fave is a CZ 452 American 16. Both are very accurate, but I prefer the "one shot one kill" discipline of the bolt action--even if the "kill" is an inanimate target. And when you stick a can on the bolt action, the thing is about as quiet as you can get with a firearm, as there is no semi-auto bolt clacking back and forth.

Personally, I enjoy them all, semi-autos, pumps, bolt actions, lever actions, even single shots, and falling blocks. What's not to like? Naturally being a collector I own them all.

My go to .22 rifle is a highly modified Ruger 10/22. However, I have an old Winchester 69A bolt action "repeater", that's been in my family for 80 years. It is very accurate also. I'd really like an old Remington Nylon 66 though.

Winchester 62A. If you can't afford/find one, I'd go with a henry pump 22 which is similar, or a lever gun. Would only shoot my 10/22 if I were timed (such as appleseed) or hunting varmints (stray cats). Not much I can't do (or hit) with the old '62... once aced a woodchuck at 75 yards elevated with federal spitfires.

I started my .22 career with a SS JC Higgins in 1957. in '68 upon graduating college I purchases a 10/22.

When the four children started to be born it was a Chipmunk .22 for the first shooting.

Then when they graduated to the 10-22 they were used to shooting slow and stayed with it.

Then I started shooting steel challenge and did a trigger kit, heavy barrel and thumbhole stock. And the fun really began.

However in there we used a couple of 513T's from remington and had more fun.

Have also won a few SASS side matches with my Marlin 39A.

I'm obsessed with my Roger 1022 with the red jacket bullpup conversion. More modern style but it's so fun to shoot. Not to mention quite accurate as to be expected, and short OAL.

CZ bolt gun. I like to hit what I'm aiming at. A CZ makes that very easy to do.

Remington 513T (10-round mag)

Winchester 72 (tube fed bolt action)

I kind of forgot about the pump action rifles. I have never actually seen, shot or held one in person, now that I think about it.

They are highly regarded as fun by many.




Why doesn't anybody make them nowadays?

My favorite is my Harrington and Richardson model 760 single shot.

Mossberg 340BB - old bolt action boy scout rifle - accurate and fun
Savage BTVSS Bolt with thumbhole stock - when trying to be really accurate
Marlin .22mag bolt when I want to reach out a little further.

14 yr old Son was hitting the 300 yard gong with the 340BB last time out, I spotted him and he walked it in. The smile on his face the first time he hit it was priceless

I did not really enjoy the 10/22 as much as I thought I would so I sold it.

Pistolas are a different story, I like both revolvers (22/22mag) and semi-autos, I and the kids have a blast with the Beretta NEOS and the Ruger SR-22 a few spare mags and see how fast and how often you can hit golfballs or cans.

This is my current plinker, outstanding little carbine that is a hoot to shoot.

They're no longer made and hard to find on the used gun market but the Remington Nylon 66's are some of the most reliable .22 semi's out there. If you're lucky enough to find someone willing to sell theirs, just run a bore snake down the barrel for cleaning. DON'T take them apart unless something is actually broken. From what I've heard it's a PIA to disassemble and reassemble again.

I own a small safe full of .22 rimfire rifles. Strangely I do not own a lever presently though. A quick inventory shows that more than half are older Mossbergs so I guess I am a Mossberg .22 collector now. I like my single shot bolts the best. My Savage 120 is shot most often but no matter the brand I find it most relaxing to shoot all my single shots. I even have a couple 10=22's

My favorite is also a Marlin 39a, in this day of hard to find 22's the 39a will shoot all the different 22's, short, long, long rifle and all the various CB and bb type rounds (it will not shoot any of the 22 mag rounds). It's accurate, trigger isn't great but not awful. Back when I still hunted (BA-before arthritis) I really enjoyed hunting tree rats with CB caps, many times I would shoot one and another one in the same tree wouldn't even know what happened and I could get a shot at it also. CB caps are also great for urbin varmint control.
