I sold my Ruger American and want something better. I am looking at the Remington 700 SPF Varmint in 308. Is that a good quality rifle or is there something better for the money?

I went with the Remington 700 SPS Varmint. Rem has a 50 dollar rebate and I got it for a good price through buds.

My LH rifles in order of my affection for them:

Winchester 70 pre-64 action
Zastava 98 Mauser
Tikka T3 lite
Savage 110
(Tie, with a very slight nod to the Ruger because of the extractor)
Ruger Hawkeye stainless laminate
Remington 700 blue walnut

The Winchester has a special place in my heart because I had wanted one for so long and this was one of the last rifles from the North Haven plant. It is phenomenally accurate. The Mauser is also a favorite because it was such a PITA to get a batch of them imported. It is however a true Mauser 98 lefty and the only thing I would change is that it has a trigger safety rather than a bolt shroud lock like on the military guns.

If I were buying one off the rack today I would get another Tikka in a heartbeat. It is a slick handling little gun. Mine is in 308.

my left hand rifles are, two model 70 win,s, two rem 700,s, two .22 rem 581,s. plus a few left hand shotguns. eastbank.

How about a 7-lb, matte-finish stainless 18.75"-barreled .308 in a left-handed action. Ignore the massive detachable box magazine; there are now polymer versions available in 3-rd (nearly flush-mount), 5-round and 10).

Remove the rail, remove the flash hider, mount a scope conventionally. The adjustable LOP birch laminate stock is strong and the rifle is stout. The trigger is surprisingly good. Short-barreled .308s have been successfully used to mountain hunt Texas Mouflon and this rifle is no different; it has earned respect as a solid hunting rifle: The Ruger Gunsite Scout

Here's a slightly shorter-barreled, blued, right-handed version in 17.25"

The OP struggled with accuracy out of one Ruger, he may want to try something different.

I think a Savage is the ticket.

Here is the thing, I liked the savage 110 but went with the Remington because I had one in the 80s and sold it because it was a right hand bolt. Now I need to start looking for a scope. I had a Nikon buckmaster 4x12x40 but was looking for something a bit better. Maybe a prostaff or leupoold.

^^^Too many extra dollars only to have to remove stuff for my taste.

Indeed. Only mentioned removal to suit perhaps a taste in more-traditional hunting rifles.

I like the detachable box magazine. I replaced the rail and added a forward-mounted telescope. Attempts to create these features in a sporter milsurp may amount to an even higher cost. This is a great field rifle. It is not at all fragile. 3-round magazine when hunting, larger-cap mags for tactical rifle schools. And so on and so forth.

And I doubt he'd suffer from any accuracy issues with this rifle. To paraphrase The Guru, "If it were half as accurate as it is, it would sill be twice as accurate as it need be..." ... for my level of shooting skill, anyway. Hahrrr.

:)

right handed world

I'm a righty, so I really don't understand what you and the rest of the 11% of the population deal with, but I'll say this- there are NO lefty firearms in the military (though they were issued lefty holsters). The closest one is the beretta M9, since the mag release can be reversed and the safety/de-cock lever is ambi, and the M110 sniper rifle has ambi controls but not ejection. That being said, our lefties in the mil did fine with "standard" righty guns- including bolt action M24 sniper rifles (rem 700), machine guns, M16s, anti tank weapons, etc. Is this non-negociable for you? you may just want to shoot a righty gun as a lefty.

Castile;

Do I understand correctly that you've already bought the replacement & that's the Remington? Or, are you still looking for suggestions?

He bought the Remington.

Well, after ordering the Remington from buds and doing the price match they did not match. They charged me the 591. instead of the 535 from grabagun for the same left hand varmint rifle same caliber. If for some reason I have trouble with this one I give up :banghead: I have great luck with my 06s. I have an early 90s Ruger 77 in 06 left hand and its very accurate. My Remington 7400 is very accurate and my Smith Corona and Remington 03a3s will do 2 inch groups at 100 yds iron sights. I also changed the scope and ordered the Nikon 308 scope that has great reviews. I know the Three I had before were the low end of the Nikon setup, a prostaff and buckmaster from wally world.

I'm a lefty, and I have a savage weather warrior in .308. Accustock, accutrigger, my best shooter by far. Puts Remmy 150 gr corelokt into one ragged hole at 100yrds. I ordered it though cabelas; no one stocks a lefty. Same price as any I could find on GB.

I like the older Remingtons and get one in a heartbeat. I am unsure about the quality control about the newer ones.

I read in a couple of places that the newer Rems are better quality than the old ones fit but finish is no where near as good. Accuracy is supposed to be very good also on the new ones. Funny but people always think older guns are better. I can remember when the Interamrs PPKs were said to be junk back in the 80s now they are sought after as one of the better ones.

I really love it when a right handed person tells a left handed person the virtues of using a right handed firearms. Oh yes you are so right. :cuss:

Personally i like the tikka t3, i got a ss one in 270 WSM, sweet shooter, the smoothest bolt stroke out of any gun in that price range and a good trigger from the factory imo. Browning x bolt would be my next choice, then a ruger m77. Those were my top 3, i went with the tikka, cant go wrong with any of those others that were named off. Whatever one feels best in your arms, get.

I have several browning left hand A bolts, in 7 mag and and 7-08. X bolt would be the current equivalent. I am partial to the 7-08. That said, just bought a 111 Savage in left hand 30-06 with a butt ugly plastic stock that will be remedied shortly. Looking forward to trying that one with a Boyd's stock.
