Everything about this is awesome. The gun and presentation box look wonderful. This is a great and thoughtful gift.

460Kodiak - That is one heck of a GREAT gift.

I wish I had such thoughtful friends.

For valentine's day I got a 1/2 eaten box of chocolates - :D

thats really nice of you. I remember when I gave that to someone as a gift. I told myself that they better like it or ill use it on them lol. Just kidding. But they loved it, that person and I actually go once every two weeks to go shoot it.

That's a very thoughtful and generous thing to do for your friend. I am sure he will feel honored to receive that gift from you. It's a nice start to his retirement. Private sale, trades and gifts are legal between state residents who are not disqualified from owning firearms in my state. I have been trading and have rarely sold personal firearms over the past forty plus years. I have given a few to family members and a very close friend. Except for those who I know well enough to be absolutely certain there is no question that they are qualified to own a gun in Virginia, I always insist on filling out a simple form with all the basic info and I check that they have documents that verify their legal status. That is usually in the form of their VADL and Va. CCH permit...In the case of gifts to family and friends, I include a short note that states it is a gift from me and I make a copy to keep. That is for my and their benefit and can also be kept with the gun through the years to document where the gun came from if it's passed down to future generations.

Well last night I got to present my buddy with his gift. He actually got a little choked up and was struck speechless. I've never seen him like that before, not even when his mom died last year. It couldn't have gone better, and he definately wasn't expecting anything like that. I and one of the co-gift givers put together a power point presentation and ended up giving a 20 minute roasting speech with funny photos. It went great and we had my buddy and the 80 person crowd laughing pretty hard.

Success. Thanks to those who gave suggestions and helped me enhance the gift.

I ended up pulling my last unopened brick of federal ammo and gave him that to go with it.

On a side note, my buddy can't drink. I call him "old one beer" as a joke. If he takes more than two aspirin he will hallucinate. Well after 12 years, last night I got him to drink some top shelf whiskey with me, and we thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Redbreast Whiskey is worth paying for if you've never had it.

I had three going away parties this week, and this retirement party. My wallet is thin, my voice is horse from toasting and speech giving, and my liver hurts for obvious reasons. I guess my reloading equipment will have to wait until next month.

Thank you so much for this post. It was fun reading all the posts right up until your gift was presented. I am really glad it came off so well.

Glad you guys enjoyed reading. When I first debated sharing this story I thought no one would really care. But this is a side of gun ownership that I think antigun folks sometimes neglect and ignore. Guns aren't a violent thing unless used in that capacity by a violent person, and sometimes they are a gift between friends who have really bonded, or between family members. I'm hoping that having stories like this out there helps demonstrate that.

Good for you... so many of us wait for someone to die and then try to shgow what they mean to us. You will find it easier to do the more you do it! Good JOB!

I rated this thread 5 STARS Excellent.
One of the neatest threads I've seen on THR in the years that I have been here.
I am old enough to remember watching Super Bowl I with Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr and company.
This was as classy as the Packers of I and II.

Have followed this story since the beginning.

THANK YOU for sharing.

THANK YOU for honoring a person in your life!!!

I gotta' say...I think you've gotten all of wishing we could have been there for the presentation!

Everything about this event has been outstanding.

i hope you didn't make him cry. :D

He actually got a little choked up. It's the first time I've ever seen that with him in 12 years. He was in disbelief too and said "I don't even know what to say. All I can say is....... All I can say right now is thanks."

It made me laugh. I wonder if anyone recorded the presentation because I'd like a copy so I can see his reaction again.

A chance like that only comes along one or maybe two times in a life time. YOU really stepped up to the moment and did a wonderful thing. He will NEVER forget you, the event or the whole day. Every time he sees that pistol he will smile. Heck...I smiled about this a couple of times today myself!

I'm glad you shared this with us.

I'm getting ready to give a special female friend a 642 J frame and the wife is cool with it. Don't get much better than that :)
