Hello everyone this is my first post so bear with me. I have a question on clean cold bore shots. i have a remington 700 5r milspec and it is the most accurate rifle i have ever shot...5 shots in 1 hole at 200 yards!! however the otherday i noticed the when i clean my bore...1 wet patch followed by one dry my poi shifts left .5 inches and 2inches down at 200 yards after that first clean cold bore flier is fired the rifles poi goes back to where is was. I would always like to know where my poi is going to be at all times and at all ranges. so i am now wondering if my clean cold bore shot is 2 inches low at 200 yards does that mean it will be 10 inches low at 1000 yards or will it be more then 10 inches because as a bullet gets slower and slower it drops more and more? any input would be greatly apprecieated sorry for the long post

This is common. I don't clean my barrel until it gets dirty enough to affect accuracy. Usually 200-300 rounds. Then I put a few rounds through it to foul the barrel and get POI back to normal. Then I don't clean it again until necessary.

re. 5r

thanks for comenting so quick i just wanted to make sure this is relatively normal as my other 700 doesnt show a poi shift when the barrels clean vs fouled... however it is not as accurate... still a moa rifle even sub moa sometimes however well see if the accuracy gets any better as i just put it in a new hs precision stock today:)...next i will have to take them both out farther and see how big of a shift i get clean bore...thanks again

Not all 700's are created equal. I have a M24, a 5R, and a custom. The key to cracking the code on cold bore/ clean bore is to look for a consistent deviation, every time you shoot. This is where a log book comes in handy, recording all of the variables.

log book

what do you mean by consistant devieation and does anyone know a good format for making a log book? FL-NC how does your m24 compare to your 5R? i have shot both and i think my 5r was actually more accurate than a custom m24 i got to shoot at the range

I have One Rem. 700 that requires a very clean barrel. And I have one that will run 100 plus rounds before cleaning. It then needs a foul shot or 3 to get back to right.
Both are heavy barrels.
The PSS shoots dirty.
The Rem. Varmint likes clean.

What I refer to as consistent deviation is where your cold/clean bore (1st) shot goes in relation to the next 4 in a group. As a former sniper instructor, I have seen rifles that had no cold bore deviation. Another factor to consider is what I call "cold shooter". Evaluation of this requires the shooter to be 100% honest with him/herself. The best way to determine if this is present is to "warm up" by shooting a different rifle to "knock the dust off", or whatever you want to call it, before you fire the rifle in question. As far as a log book "format", they can be purchased from anywhere that sells tactical gear for snipers/DMs. Some of the factors to consider in the data of the book: ammo type and lot number, muzzle velocity, temperature, wind, relative humidity, visibility, how you're feeling that day, etc. Pretty much you can "go crazy" on data. With good data, Horus ballistic software, and good marksmanship principles, I (and others) can hit a man sized target at a MILE with a 308. My M24 is a brand new rebuild from Remington. My first group was .5 MOA. My 5R shoots about the same (I never put a caliper to the groups). My custom with a 20" barrel suppressed consistently shoots 1 MOA or better, and has so many rounds through it I didn't think it would last this long. Pro tip- insure the action screws on your 700 are tightened to 65 inch pounds. Check before each session.

thank you FL-NC and everyone you are all very informative i only started shooting/reloading 5 years ago i still got alot to learn i would love to be able to reach out and touch a target at a mile...maby one day

Checked my last two f-class score cards for my 308 Milspec. We shoot 10 sighters and then 15 for score. My last two sighter scores (at 300 yards), two different weeks:

6,6,8,7,10,8,X,9,X,X

and

8,8,7,8,8,8,X,10,9,X

I always shoot with a clean barrel. I guess it's about time I stopped or at least experimented. I always thought I just needed some warm up time and also time to figure out the wind. Very windy where we shoot.

The solution is not to clean the barrel of rifles that are shooting well. And if you have to for some reason, by all means fire a fouling shot or five.

You'll wear your barrel out cleaning it trying to get enough dope on the clean bore shot to characterize it.
