Numrich shows a kit to make the 1903 hold 10rds. Has anyone ever tried it, how did it work? Or did it work at all?

Kit comes with new spring, follower and a chain. Says that it clips into the floor where the old bottom plate went. All that's fine but what does the chain do? Keep you from losing it if it falls off?

My biggest concern is that the thing works, that the new spring and follower work and don't bind or do weird things that junk followers and weak springs can do.

Would be nice to have an extra 5 rounds in the rifles. So... Let's hear from someone that's done this or used a rifle set up with one.

I don't understand wanting 5 extra rounds and having a box stick out of an otherwise pretty sleek rifle? Have you tried stripper clips? You can load 5 rounds awfully quick with a stripper clip. Everyone has their own needs and wants, I would just caution you to think real hard about whether you really need 5 extra rounds and how much bulkier the rifle with be with a protrusion out the bottom of the stock. The 1903 is a classic bolt action rifle not a new fangled semi or full auto.
 
They were putting extended magazines and periscope kits on those things a hundred years ago in world war one. They also turned them into semiauto's. Whats old is new.
 
Exactly, these kits look like they're close to 100 years old. Someone saw the need for extra ammo and decided to design it. That and the semi auto adapters that they made for the rifle.

Has nothing to do about the looks of the rifle, has to do with putting more lead down range. Same as the magazine cut off feature, fire all the loose rounds you can. If the enemy charged, switch it off and shoot the 5 rounds in the internal magazine.

Germans thought that the Americas had fully automatic weapons because they put so much lead down range at them because of the magazine cut off feature. So worrying about looks is a moot point, I want to know how it works.
 
The Numrich M1903 Springfield magazine extension is similar to the one designed for the German Mauser Gewehr 98 during WWI, albeit with a smaller capacity. It is of new manufacture and a pure fantasy piece as nothing like it was ever made for the M1903.

The magazine box itself holds five rounds, which combined with the rifle's magazine increases the capacity to ten. The chain holds a key that is inserted crosswise through the magazine to keep the follower, or five rounds, in place when not fixed to the rifle.

The procedure would be to keep five rounds in the rifle, and when you need extra firepower, you use a loaded cartridge to remove the floorplate and the follower and spring along with it, attach the loaded extension in place of the floorplate, and pull out the key to release the extra cartridges. You then stick the key into the provided loop to keep it out of the way.

From what I found in a quick search, the follower spring is underpowered and needs replacing. If it were me, I'd connect two standard M1903 magazine springs together, and maybe get another follower, too.

Close, but no cigar. You're thinking of the British repelling a German advance shooting "the Mad Minute" with their SMLEs, far earlier in the war before the US got involved.
