Apologies if wrongly placed.

From time to time, I've seen references to the publication of a follow up to John Ross's Unintended Consequences, which I found l found perhaps overly long but interesting. Said work never seems to appear. Am I missing something, or am I the victim of wishful thinking and or rumor.

I read that book and couldn't put it down. Friend lent me his hard copy, when done I had to give it back.

I like John Ross. Last time I heard, he packs a .500 S&W Special for CCW purposes.

Pretty cool dude!!

On his personal website he talks about working on and off on his follow up novel. Site won't come up for me right now, but it's john-ross.net

I would expect he won't write another novel. I do want to find a hardcover original edition of Unintended Consequences one day.

Apparently his uncle was killed by a bull, instilling in him the desire to pack a handgun that could deal with anything on the planet, hence the protagonist's .44 Mag, before the advent of the X frame.
IIRC, the Custom Shop was building Ross edition 5" .500s, sans brake. Not outrageously expensive either, as custom stuff goes. I'd been trying to justify one for quite a while.
I thought the book was epic, I'd snap up a sequel in half a heartbeat. I gave away several of the hardbacks as Xmas presents.

I had never heard of this book until this posting, so thanks for bringing it up. For anyone like me who doesn't have a copy and don't want to pay crazy prices on ebay for a hardcover you can get a new softcover from the below link. It was $40 after shipping. Mine shipped today and I'm excited to dive in. I may pick up a signed hardcopy afterwards too!

Received my concealed carry from John, real nice guy. At one time the book was online for your reading pleasure. Not sure if it still is. I will see if I can find it. Had a link but it was on a computer that no longer functions.

I found an "Unintended Consequences" in my local library catalog, but it's by "Stuart Woods."

Is that a pseudonym for John Ross? Other "hits" show "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross, so what's up with that? Is one a pseudonym he quit using?

Two copies out, I put a hold on one of them.

^ They are different books.

John Ross, "Unintended Consequences", 1996.

Stuart Woods, "Unintended Consequences: A Stone Barrington Novel", 2013.

Kinda like there are three bands with the name Spontaneous Combustion that I know about (and may be more). A dozen books entitled "Game Over". Same with some movie titles. Titles and short phrases cannot be copyrighted (and getting one trademarked is an ordeal).

^ Thanks ! As usual, Carl N. Brown, accurate, thorough, and timely solid information.

I'll cancel my hold and get down to the library to see if they can get it on interlibrary loan. They're sometimes much better at finding oddball stuff when you talk to the info desk personnel FTF.

John should arrange to sell it as an epub on amazon. At least that way he could be making money on a lower-cost edition for folks that don't have dead-tree format fetish :)

It would also allow fans to point interested readers at a non-pirated electronic edition.

For those doing interlibrary loan, the ISBN # may help to disambiguate which title.

From AMAZON:

ISBN-13: 978-1888118049
ISBN-10: 1888118040

I think with a shave-and-a-haircut, "Unintended Consequences" could be a huge seller.

Update it based on events since it was originally published, get rid of the ridiculous kinky sex parts, create a new cover and give it an overall thorough edit (it really needs it!) and it think it would be a hot seller to a huge number of people.

The author specifically addressed that on his blog. Apparently it is already selling well enough to suit him and he's not going to do anything to it. He says he has had just as many people tell him those were the parts that made the novel feel real to them as he has heard complaining.

Thanks for publishing that. I dug out that info on my own. According to the Librarian I spoke to both numbers refer to it. They could not find it on interlibrary loan, so they're going to do a "Prospector" search for it, which will take a while.

I have that "dead tree" fetish, for which I apologize to any greenies herein, but I've been reading black ink on white paper since the early 1940s and frankly have a hard time actually enjoying long copy (novels, etc.) on a screen.

Very frequently, after borrowing a book, if I like it, I end up buying it anyhow. I prefer doing that because my bookshelf space budget is limited in terms of linear feet.

I'd like to see if it could use a good editing. After all, if it can be made more readable, as some suggest, it might find a wider audience... which would be a good thing, I guess. At least according to what I've read herein.

After all, every good writer needs a good editor.

Now, if I were smart, which I ain't, I'd shut up until I actually read the thing.

Kinky sex (by any measure) made such a novel feel "real"? How so? The kinky sex didn't offend me but it was pretty clear that the author was projecting some of his own fantasies (realities?) which gave a very slimy to the overall work.

I don't know how much it would cost to have a work of that size professionally edited, but doing so (even without changing any content) would have greatly improved it.

Someone described the book in a nutshell: "Dude kills some rednecks when he's 12, gets raped in college, starts dating a hardcore man hating lesbian that won't f--k him but brings other chicks to bed for both of them to f--k, ends up at his friend's place while ATF agents are raiding..."

Any extremely interesting story, with some excellent firearms history, but a terrible execution.
