I have a savage axis 223 HB and lately I have been having issues with it not ejecting spent cases. I have to rack the bolt back pretty hard or else they fall short and lay on the mag.

anyone have a clue about why this is doing this? now I noticed that some cases I don't have this issue and can lightly pull the bolt and sometimes I have to slam it open to get them to eject on their own.

I believe the Axis has the same bolt setup as the 110. It has a spring loaded plunger for an ejector, and should eject the shell no matter how slowly you work the bolt. Could have some debris or hardened lube blocking the plunger, or a weak spring.

do you happen to have any pics with what you described? not familiar with the plunger and spring.

Weak ejectIon is a hallmark of Savage bolt-guns. I couldn't believe how weak the ejection was on my new 11-TPH .223. I was on a shooting bench and had the case open next to my bench rest and every time I racked the bolt the shells landed gingerly in the case about 10" away.

Yeah that seems to be the norm for Savage bolt guns. As a reloader I rather like it; at the bench if I open the bolt slowly it drops the empty right on top of the magazine so it stays clean and dent free. If I slam it back it ejects the way one would expect.

From your last description, it sounds like you have an extractor issue too. Maybe a good cleaning of the bolt face will help.

You are correct.

Gunshack does offer upgraded parts. I bought one as I converted my Axis to a 300BO. You get a better ejector and extractor.
