In my experience, there's no room for negotiation. The employees check their computers, which show them how much the store will pay. Take it or leave it. You will get the wholesale price, but if you're trading for a new gun, it has the benefit of reducing sales tax.

Add to that, 50% IF they really want them to resell anyway. Otherwise they will offer less for sure. Your best bet is to advertise them locally for what you think they should reasonably bring and get a better price by waiting a bit longer with a personal sale.

Not in my state. Tax is on the full retail price regardless of trade in value.

I can't imagine a worse place to sell a gun than at Cabela's if you are looking to make money.

This one and Cameron - nonsensical scenarios not withstanding - get it.

Cabella's will be unprofitable and likely quite slow (in the case of consignment) for selling them unless the OP agrees to a number so low that Cabella's buys them outright.

Widows seem to like selling there.

To give you an idea, here's my experience with Cabela's.......... You have an idea of what a jm stamped Marlin 1895 stainless steel is going for now days (around $700-$800). They offered me $450. It was 99% condition with the box.

Theyre a gun shop. They buy low and sell high. Its how they make money and pay 6 people to stand behind the counter and have mounted big horn sheep strewn throughout the store..

I've never really heard of anyone that sold a gun to Cabelas and didn't feel like they got bent over. You'd be better off trying to sell them locally or on GB.

They will come up a bit if you are a good negotiator. Bare in mind that they have to sit on it until they move it, and they can't possibly pay you full retail if they are going to make a profit.

Check Gunbroker for value, and expect 60ish%. You may get them up to 65% if you're shrewd.

A few years ago I asked gamestop how much they would give me for an Xbox360 that had red ringed (died.) They can be refurbished and sold again tho. Guy said $20 with the hard drive and one working remote. I could sell the remote and hard drive myself at the time for at least $20 each. I feel like selling guns to a big name store would work about the same.

I was in the gun library at Cabalas a few years ago when a guy brought in his fathers S&W HD Outdoorsman, in 90% or better condition.

They convinced him it was a later model K-38.

And gave him $150 bucks for it.

Two weeks later it was listed on their website for $1,600.
And a week later it was sold!!

Sell them on gunbroker, Armslist, or any other reportable online auction if you want top dollar out of them.

You WILL NOT get even close to fair price for them at Cabalas, or any other gun store.

Not even remotely true.

Bought a used Remington 40X in the late 70s for 350.00. Took it to Cabelas 2 years ago, having not shot it in over 30 years. They gave me 1300.00 for it and
put it on the rack in the Gun Library for 1795.00. Didn't last 2 weeks. You never know.

adjusting for inflation......that $350 gun in 1970 would cost about $2,000 today.......so yeah, you got about 50% of what you paid for it.

if you are selling guns to anyone who plans on reselling it (for profit) , you are not going to get a lot of money....

He said late 70s, I googled inflation calculator earlier and checked it, using 1978 to 2014 as my years, $350 in 1978 came to $1,270.82 in 2014. So pretty good value retention.

If you weren't in Anchorage I would love that 32. Post them on the sale board here and let your friendly ffl send it from place to place for you. If that fails, gunbroker brings good money, but they do charge commission.

What you need to know is the current retail price the retailer will charge, expect 50% of that.

If you sell two, figure you'll get about full price for one.

I had a local Cabelas evaluate a rifle about possibly selling to them last winter. The guy was very professional and knew guns. The rifle I have was made in very limited numbers in 1994 and he had never seen one. I knew going it that it should sell for $700-$800. The guy spent about 20 minutes researching my rifle and agreed with me and said it would go on their rack priced at $750. But 65% of what they would sell for was what they offered.

I understand they have to have room to make a profit. I didn't leave mad, but just didn't want to part with the rifle at the price they offered. Just understand going in that they will offer you 65% of its real value. If you can sell it yourself you can probably do better.
