What do you keep on the nightstand?

I like profiling and know nothing about you.

But you have a very old landline version phone and a doily on your nightstand. Please tell me you live in a nursing home and didn't actually choose that decor.
A landline phone is a necessity if the electricity goes out.

(I live in earthquake country.)

4" 686+ loaded with Hornady Critical Defense .38 spl 110 grain, in bed holster. Surefire G2ZX lanyarded to left wrist. Blade under pillow.

Before everybody jumps up and down about sleeping with the flashlight attached to my wrist, for me it's very calming, that way I know I don't have to worry about knocking it off the nightstand or whatever, all I have to remember is flash light, front sight, press trigger. The design of that model is great, two fingers go over the little ledge, press with the thumb joint, very stable, perfect fit. I have practiced quite a bit using it with the left hand while shooting with the right. I figured out how to position the button things on the lanyard so it stays on my wrist but isn't noticeable while sleeping. (The two further loops are around my wrist, the close one is just slack.)

Walther P99cAS with 15-round mag and a 60 pound lab that will gladly escort someone through the house, tail wagging, and show you where all the tennis balls have landed.

Sig P-250. Condition 3. Why? Because statistically safety trumps the possibility of actual use. I am only a slide rack away from ready. Also, I need to accomplish one mechanical movement as an alerting barrier so I don't re-actively aim and fire without that micro-second validation that I am doing the right thing. Whereas my practiced defensive posture, like so many others here, is to gain a defensive position of advantage and wait rather than proactively clear, I feel good about condition 3.

I agree.

I have a Mini-Vault and gun is not chambered with a loaded mag inserted.

Mine Is an English Lab, and 75 lbs of hugs. But she will let me know if someone is around the house. When I had the 2 Rotties, people used to ask me if I had them for protection.
I would tell them , no they have me for that. I keep 2, 9mm pistols, a G19 with extended mag, plus a 31 round mag, and 3 17.s, "only because that is where I keep my extra mags anyway. I have a TLR-4 on the Glock, and a Kahr PM9 with NS, and 3 mags, as a back up. Or a Glock 26 instead of the Kahr. Once in a while I will rotate out to a 45 Glock 30 "s", and an XDS, if I feel like something is around the house for a few nights, also my AR is very close.
It stays loaded with 5 Mags, in case we get invaded by Zombies. I hate when that happens.

My dog is no threat to any person that walks the earth. So, the bad guy will certainly make it to the door.

But, the wifes stupid cat would likely get under an intruders feet and trip him. Almost 99% chance the bad guy brakes something in the fall.

Presuming he survives the dreaded "midnight black cat trip assault, every window and door is alarmed.

If all else fails, then I do have G19 in a biometric pistol safe on the bed stand. Installed light, spare mag.

Generally my 'nightstand' gun is a full size version of my carry gun. So if I'm carrying a Glock 26, its a 19 (I don't have a 17... yet) or if I'm carrying the Glock 30S, then its a 21. If I'm carrying a commander length 1911, then I have my Kimber Warrior. I like to keep a few spare mags in the drawer, so I figure comparability is nice.

Either way it has a Streamlight mounted.

My nightstand gun is my EDC pistol, a cocked-and-locked Sig P938 Extreme that I pocket carry in a Desantis Super Fly. In the morning, it goes back in my pocket.

Nightstand holds lamp, remotes, cellphone, maybe a book or tablet and water bottle.

Flashlight in top drawer.

M1911 in gunvault bolted to floor next to bed.

Shotgun in biometric safe in closet 10' away.

Sig 2022 in .40 in the top drawer of nightstand. Full mag +1 in the pipe.
The wife's side of the bed has a Taurus 82 with a full cylinder of Golden Saber HPs.

G19 or 45 XD for, both with rail-mounted lights.
G42 or the wife.
Plus a hyper-active cockapoo that absolutely will not be snuck up on. So we should have PLENTY of warning...

STI Tactical 4.0 in .40 with tritium night sights and a Streamlight 3. Kept in a Speed Vault mounted on the side of the nightstand.

Sit P250f-45 acp. With rail light and night sight. .Why? Because I can. Holstered with spare mag. Arms reach. Chamber empty. If I'm not aware enough to chamber it, I shouldn't be pointing it around. Home alarm should give me time to rack slide.

Sig 1911 45 ACP with TLR-2 light /laser combo on my side. Wife has CZ 82 on her side.

It was mentioned on another thread by the OP that a lot of us are not telling the condition we keep the firearm in a when in that role. I believe a lot of us are not up for full disclosure at times. Especially on a public forum where something that is now public *might* be used in a lawsuit in the future. Imagine how you would feel if after an incident you were in a court battle and their lawyer pulled up a post from many years past saying that you used the most lethal bullets you could find and was ready to "use them with the slightest provocation to KILL that idiot!" I am sure that would help you out.:what:

Now, I am a firefighter and know a loaded chamber will cook off and possibly hurt somebody in a fire. I will for the OP clarify my previous answer. So I use a semi auto within reach at night and leave the chamber empty--safety off. Same with the long guns. Racking the slide is not all that hard if you train to always do it that way when in bed and you need your handgun. Using a revolver instead? Then this is impossible unless you leave a round out which makes little sense IMHO. YMMV

Certainly could be an issue and have seen it mentioned plenty of times. For me, my chambered handgun resides in a 7GA (3/16") steel handgun safe and a hollow point round won't penetrate it if it does cook off. My muzzle also is pointed to an exterior brick wall as well.
