Hey guys!

Well I finally got around to a project that I've had in mind for at least five years now. What I wanted to do was make a modern iteration of the classic "trench gun" style shotguns such as the M97 and M12 Winchesters. I knew right from the start I wanted to build it off a Mossberg M590A1 shotgun as it is all milspec and comes with a bayonet lug.

To fulfill my requirements, I took a 9-shot 20" bbl M590A1 and added a USGI "silent sling" to it with milspec sling swivels (GrovTec Mil-Force). Next I added a heat shield to the gun, the special parkerized model meant for the heavy barrel on the 590A1 series guns. To complete the "build" (not much to it really!) I added a Vietnam era surplus M7 bayonet to the shotgun. This is all in accordance with MIL-S-344G for a Type 1 shotgun. Here is the final result:

I really like this gun! As you can see I also have some accessories for it. A Claymore mine bag holds a few dozen extra shells (old trick from the Vietnam War), the M8A1 sheath for the M7 bayonet, some Winchester/Olin military-grade buckshot (current issue ammunition), and a neat ammo pouch made by a defense supplier for a 2007 U.S. military contract. So, technically everything you see in the picture (minus the floor) is either 100% milspec or genuine USGI surplus.

I can't wait to get this gun to the range! It feels so great to finally have done this. I think the end result looks very awesome. I'll be posting a range report in the near future. Stay tuned, and thanks for looking!

Always liked the appearance of military shotguns/trench guns.

Neat piece, there. Nice to have a modern-made action under it all, too.

beauty! and i thought a Pumpkin Puncher was cool looking.
lucky for us, a bayonet is illegal here in the people's republic of hawaii. just think how many lives that law has saved [emoji52]

Nice job of putting together a modern day U.S. trench gun. Like all of the add-ons and accessories.

And the Claymore mine bag was also great for carrying around a bunch of 30 round M16 magazines too!

Sweet. I was close to getting a 590A1, but then saw a near mint 870 police mag for around $300 and went with that.

Add story about a special order of only 100 (or whatever number you pick) from Gen. Westmoreland, slap on a $5000 price tag, and you will do OK.

Nice gun CoolDill! I too am afflicted with shottinglingus. I love my M590A1 with 18.5" barrel. It has the heavy barrel, parkerized finish, 3 dot sights, wood riot style fore-end and sporter style birch butt-stock. I quickly scanned thru the MILSPEC requirements but I will have to examine them closer. I'm wondering how mine would compare. I have a strange urge to build an "as used" not a "as issued" shotgun. Maybe a short barrel 590 with a "english/skeet" style straight stock and ribbed fore-arm.

Nice job. There is something that is just so business like about a shotgun with a bayonet and perforated handguard.

Here it is, I picked it up for a song, I had repaired the butt-stock I had laying around and bought a blemish fore-arm from Havlin. I like it, and I'm super comfortable with it.

Thought about getting the beaded one, but opted for the ghost ring sights. No other firearm I own matches the confidence I feel when I use this firearm.

Yeah I know what you mean! I've never had a gun that made me feel better than a 12 gauge in hand. I know some have different feelings, but I'd rather take one over an AR any day inside 25 yards or so.

Yeah, I mean I've got my AR beside the bed, but that is simply because of the balistics of a 55 grain bullet in flesh and sheetrock.

But that Mossberg inspires confidence!

Nothing says "get off my lawn" better than a pump gun with a bayonet on it. :what:
