I recently picked up a FAL and have been looking for surplus magazines which seem to be unicorns these days.

Anyone know where to buy surplus, or if any commercial mags are available that are reliable? All my usual sources are dry.

I find that the availability of surplus FAL magazines at gun shows is hit-and-miss. At some shows, there are plenty of them, and at others, there's not a one to be found. Prices seem to be in the range of $20 to $30 each, in excellent (refinished) condition.

You want to avoid the recently-made DSA or Korean mags.

The best ones, IMO, are the Steyr Austrian mags. You can identify these by the witness holes on the back. Second-best are the Belgian ones without the witness holes. Israeli mags are also out there, but the workmanship is not as good as the Austrian or Belgian ones.

+1 on avoiding dsa mags. They all but admitted to me that there mags are out of spec. I recently havent seen a mag under 35 bucks at a gun show out here on the coast, but everyone around here is already afraid Hillary will get elected... how many you need? I may have a few to spare of the surplus ones...

There's a guy who posts in the falfiles marketplace who has some. He's asking about $35 each for them. The DSA's I've used (in a friend's rifle during sight in) are tight and have a strange fit, but they did function fine once locked in.

Just checked all my DSA mags in my Imbel receiver FAL..
I have 2 types of DSA mags,
older, purchased about three years ago from DSA, metal followers, fit fine with just a little play. rocks in, locks in, releases, and rocks out just fine.
And newer, purchased last month from cdnn, with polymer followers, fit fine with almost no play and just a tiny bit stiffer to rock in and out but locks and releases fine.
DSA mags are all I have for the rifle and have been flawless so far.

DSA's feed lips are a tad angular and aggressive. Very slight work on the feed lips with pliers and a dremel or file, the DSA mags run fine. I have 8 of their 30 rounders, did that mod immediately, and nary a problem.

Apparently the DSA problems are confined to their 20 rounders. Their 30's are OK.

Ordered 3 of the Moses mags to try out (thanks for the tip czhen). I sure hope they are reliable and durable...it would be nice to have a source for quality new fal mags.

I picked up a few moses mags just before the CO ban. They are a little fat making them tight in my rifle so I stick to the surplus steel ones. As I recall they fed okay but were too tight so not recommended. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I use Moses Mags in my Rock River LAR-8 (FAL magazines) and they fit and function perfectly. I'd call them really high quality. Of course it's not the same rifle, but the function should be the same. You might call Moses Mags and talk to them - they certainly answered the phone when I called. I think I talked directly to Moses....

wow. I feel like I was spot on for picking up so many back in 2005 or so when I could find them for $7 each. I must've bought 12 or so.

Same here, I bought 25 surplus mags when I bought my SA58 Para from DSA. Back then they were $5.00 each, and DSA threw in a new spring with each one.

Should have bought more.......

Well I received the Moses mags and I have to say they are not what I expected. The feed lips are so flimsy I can squeeze the mag with one hand and the top round pops out.

Despite being flimsy, all were a tremendously tight fit (bolt open, mag empty) and one would not lock in with the bolt closed no matter how hard I tried. The 2 that did lock in were so tight that the bolt would not go into battery, and feed lip shavings were evident.

Very disappointing at $27.99 each. I think I'll ask for a refund.

Ok, so I did a tiny amount of sanding and flash trimming and tried the Moses mags again. They worked flawlessly. Customer service from Moses was superb. They offered tech support and a refund if not satisfied. Can't ask for more than that.

The 20 round DSA mag is a POS however, causing multiple misfeeds. My surplus mag worked 100% as well.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot DSA?

Moses made the mags in that way so can be used, in metric or inch pattern with a little of adjustment/sanding.
