Scented Gun Powders. Is it possible?

Since I have a bunch of menthol crystals, in the past I've thought of topping off the powder charges with a few of them just to see the reaction from bystanders when they got a whiff of the stuff.

My wife is a chemist and she says

"NO"

Flavors and scents are organic chemicals delivered in a solvent.
Salts and spices are flavor enhancers with spices delivered in plant oils (solvents again).

1) They are expensive.
2) They would burn off when the powder ignited and not be recognizable.
3) They would change the makeup of the powder and decompose the powder and primer.
4) Did I mention they are expensive?

The fellow who added it to his bullet lube has the more practical idea.

I don't know about adding scents to the powder. I know that cream of wheat smells nothing like it does cooked when fire forming. I fire formed about 200 cases for my .22 CHeetah MK1 and the smell is still hanging in the garage.... it was absolutely terrible. My wife is still not happy with me. All will be forgiven when she gets to shoot some prairie dogs with it though !!

What do you mean? They already have custom smelling gun powders. You've got "Yellowstone Hot Pot" by Pyrodex, "Dirty kitty litter box" by Trailboss and "Ode to rusting metal" by 300 MP.
Literally laughed out loud at that one. Thanks for the chuckle!

I once used some 28ga fiber wads in a .45-70 load.
smelled like burning hair
During a match the RO was trying to figure out who it was.

+1 for bacon and coffee.

Colors could be interesting as well. I'm thinking staggered loads of red, white, and blue.

There was some scent that people used to mix in with their model airplane fuel that did not seem to affect the running. Some though it smelled like grape, I though it smelled like "hey, I'm stupid".

Bacon. Simple, just wrap your barrel with real bacon, cover will foil, and fire 200 rounds rapidly. Remove, eat, repeat. :neener:
