I'm probably looking for a unicorn.

I prefer outdoors, as I like to take a rifle out to the range, which is complicated with indoor ranges.

Looking for local experience and knowledge.

And, I realize I'm asking about an area about the size of Connecticut. But, I'm in north Arlington, so, I can get to all sorts of places.

Two decent outdoor ranges I have used in your area are Elm Fork and Quail Creek.

Elm fork also has a really nice shotgun sports area with a great sporting clays course.

Good luck!

Bob

Food for thought.
Ok, if I have it right, that's
Alpine, 5482 Shelby nearer to Kennedale; $13; no FMJ
Quail Creek, FM 1171, over by TMS; $18; no FMJ
and
Elm Fork, 10571 Luna Rd, in Las Colinas; $17 per range or $25 for both rifle & pistol; No FMJ or military ammo; no unscoped rifles on 100yd line, no pistol grip rifles,; no outside targets, targets $1 each at range.

Certainly looks like my stockpiles of FMJ are in no risk of depletion.

There is also Frisco Gun Range here in Frisco that has a 100 yd indoor rifle range, but it's high and they will run you out if you shoot over an hour. Even though it is ten minutes from me, I quit shooting there in favor of Elm Fork.

Garland Gun Range is a good range but they had a prohibition on .30 cal or above on the rifle range because of a lawsuit. Not sure if that is still in place or not.

Gibsons on the east side is the only one I know that allows fmj. There are also 2 clubs out his way also, Fusion and Lone Star. Garland is no go on fmj.

I'll wager the "no fmj" is an NRA Range Insurance issue, to limit ricochets over the berm. But, that's a guess.

Elm Fork is $2 off for active duty military; $1 off for retired and reserves--so you are getting a free target.

Looked at Frisco, but, dang, 40 mile drive to pay those sorts of prices . . . $35 per hour for 100 yard rifle. And, $225 per year to get half off range fees a hair steep. No "military surplus ammo," but no FMJ restriction.

May have to look hard at Garland Public. One-time $15 charge, then $15 for any visit thereafter, and the 15 is good all day, on all ranges. No ammo restrictions, either. Printed targets ok as long as on paper; they sell targets for 25¢/5 for $1. Which might beat the 43 mile drive.

Elm Fork had a bigger Veteran's discount last year. I think I paid $11 the last time I shot there in November.

Frisco is like a country club atmosphere. They will bump you if you are a non-member and a member shows up.

Saw the no Barretts nor 50 BMG; did not see an FMJ restriction. Will bear that in mind.

Just rattled out TxGunRange which is in Midlothian. $10 membership; $15 per day to shoot; $1 targets; FMJ permitted. Only 21 miles away, too.

May be too far.

But the Austin rifle club is a gem in my opinion. Outdoor range, everyone is very responsible. You need a bg check or a CHL/LTC to even get in and member ship is only 150/yr. All applicants are screened for proficiency as well (gotta be able to hit a target) and safety is drilled in at sign up. There's always people there who are willing to share in their knowledge (esspecially on the weekends). And they also do competition shooting if that is your kind of thing. I love it there. I pick my own hours... so I go during the week during 9-5 hours :) Not a soul in sight sometimes. Heaven for me :)

last i check they still allowed all kinds of ammo.... And when i signed up they were talking about getting rid of .50 bmg, but i dont think enough people there shoot it to warrant banning it (it tears the hell out of the berms and will run right through so you have to change your point of aim frequently)

Austin would be a long haul--should only be three hours, but, the way I35 is from Waco south makes it 4 hours just to Mopac.

Jacob's sounds interesting, but steep--$40/month is $480 year on top of the $50 membership fee. Especially for an 80 mile one-way drive.

Only 95 miles to TacPro.

Still more questions and not enough answers (like where to find cheap SP/HP 5.56
