Does my .45 1911 need a parabellum pal? I think yes

I know it's all purely subjective, but I kinda feel like a 1911 is just meant to be chambered in .45acp. Anything else just rankles me,

I sort of feel the same way though not quite to the extent that I ever felt all that bothered by it. Like you though I prefer my 1911s to be full size guns (though I do have some "slightly abbreviated" Commanders and Officers Models in .45ACP too), and I like them all to be in .45ACP.

I have had a few full size Colt Governments in .38 Super and while they were alright I just didn't like them as much as I did the Commander size version. To me the smaller caliber, like the .38 Super or the 9mm., meant having it in a smaller size 1911, even if it was less than an inch taken off the slide/barrel. I don't know if this is sounds a bit unusual or not but it's what I like and what I have gone with over the years.

Colt 1911 commander in 9mm. To paraphrase a famous TV commercial, 'you're gonna love the way you shoot.'

Of course, I also vote yes. I am with the others who suggested a Hi-Power, or a HP and a 1911 in 9mm. I was fortunate to be around when the surplus Argentine pistols were being sold a number of years ago and picked up this set. A model 1927 Sistema and an FN licensed Argentine Hi-Power.

I was that way when I was a wee lad. Anything else than .45 ACP in the 1911 was blasphemy! Or so I thought. Now I have a .38 Super (LOVE IT) and a 9MM. Really love shooting the cheaper lower recoil 9MM ammo sometimes. Although I can load .45 ACP pretty light, it still costs more. 9MM ammo is lighter to carry around too. Yep, gettin' old. :)

Been looking for a Colt Series 70 Government in 9mm. I have the .45 and .38 Super guns but still would like a 9mm to fill that void. :)

Hmmmm. That sounds like a plan.

Unfortunately, I would have to start from scratch as my Series 70 45 ACP slide is now a 38/45 Clerke and the frame is a 22 LR. The Series 70 45 ACP barrel is in an Auto Ordinance M1911. My 38 Supers are pre and post Series 70 models.

I'd go for the M1911 in 9x19 but I'm partial to the M1911. I like shooting a Browning HP but not as much as the M1911.

Iv always wanted to try a 9mm 1911. The 9mm 1911 pattern gun is the ultimate steel challenge gun.

The most close thing I have tried to that was a svi 2011 in 40 cal. It was incredible.

I have the case forming and loading dies for the 38/45 Clerke. :) Never did get on built.

I sort of collect the Colt Government Series 70 guns and just figure a nice 9mm would help round things out. Last one I saw was sweet but I went and got an unfired (far as I could tell) Series 70 Gold Cup with the box. Should vave gotten the 9mm that day. :(

I like my 38 Super and would get another but still need that illusive 9mm 1911 Series 70 Colt.

9mm SR1911 Update

Ok, completed my second range trip with the Ruger 9mm "LW Commander" today. First, let me say that I am not a stranger to the platform. I've been a fan of the 1911 since 1966 and this is the 31st that I've purchased NIB. With that said, I must report that I am very impressed with this gun.

On the first trip I ran 225 rounds through it with the two supplied mags. This included 100 rds. each of Rainer 115 gr ball and 115 gr HP. I also shot another 25 rds of Speer 115 gr +P+ GDHP. The mags are Ruger marked, 9 rounders, supplied by Check-Mate. These are excellent mags featuring the improved Devel/CMC follower as used on their latest 45 ACP mags.

Today, after obtaining 4 additional Check-Mate mags, I ran another 100 rounds of 115 gr ball through the gun. I am happy to report that during these two range trips not one problem of any kind occurred. The gun fed, fired and ejected flawlessly, and it locked open on the empty mag every time. Ejection was very consistent, creating a nice pile about 6 feet to the right and 8 feet behind the shooter.

Overall, a big "thumbs up" for this Ruger. The gun is very nicely fit and finished and seems to run great (much better than my normal expectations of NIB 1911's)

Mandatory pics bellow; 54 rds 115 ball (6 mags) 7 yard line, and Ruger on the bench.

I've got a Government size 1911 in 9mm - a Citadel version with all the "tactical" bells and whistles. It was on sale for ~$330 a few years back at Academy. Fantastic shooter with a nice trigger! I know that it's an oversized, heavy gun for the cartridge, but it shoots so nicely. It holds an extra round over the .45 version, too.

I can agree with the sentiment of starting new shooters off on this platform after switching from a .22lr. The recoil is quite manageable, and the trigger is familiar to anyone who starts on a Ruger standard/MarkI/Mark II/Mark III/whatever.

I just fitted an EGW oversize firing pin stop per 1911Tuner's "testimony" on various forums last night, and hopefully will be able to give a range report in the next few weeks. It's supposed to reduce muzzle flip and and spread out the recoil impulse to make follow up shots nicer. If all goes well, this thing is going to be quite the shooter.

Got three, one in each of the major calibers (9mm, .40 S&W & .45ACP) as well as a Caspian High Cap in .40 S&W.

9mm recoil is light and the gun runs like a sewing machine. .45 is .45. We've all shot them and know what they feel like.

The .40 S&W was a surprise. I made it from an old Kimber I had, adding a Kart barrel & bushing and STI slide. It shoots super flat (limited muzzle flip), recoil is softer than I expected and it's a tack driver. Took some work to get it running reliably, but it's as reliable as any of the others now. It is my favorite.
