Looking for a nice rifle

Sooooo.... If i want a bolt action rifle with nice bluing and a stock made of the same type of wood and finish found on a Benelli shotgun such as the Ethos.... Where would you guys suggest I look? Preferably something commercially available, no money for anything custom right now, lol.
 
The Winchester is just a rifle you have to love. My love affair with the rifle began in 1958 and being of dinosaur age I was always attracted to the older Winchester and Remington guns. Blued steel and quality walnut is my rifle of choice. I hope the grandchildren appreciate then as much as I have. I also like others. The bottom line in my opinion is you get what you pay for. Beautiful wood is not quite inexpensive.

I would also buy the Winchester because I think that is the best production rifle being sold today. There is one thing that got my attention about the rifle. They come from the factory with a 13 3/4 inch length of pull. I guess the Winchester people think that most shooters will be shooting prone which I almost never do. There will be a lot of people who buy the Winchesters getting tired of snagging their coat when they shoulder the rifle. Lots of work for the gunsmiths making the length of pull shorter.

How do you define "nice"? A well-made, good-looking, upscale rifle isn't cheap.
 
Twas ME, I'd look for a Pre-64 Model 70 Winchester.
True, it's a used rifle but you will find all the good stuff that you're looking for, ESPECIALLY accuracy.
Plenty of these rifles around so you can be fussy about caliber, fit and finish.
I own six of these including two Pre/Wars and a .257 Roberts.
Shooting tailored reloads, they are really all anyone wants in a hunting rifle
 
If you don't mind used, I bought a pre-Garcia Sako in .30-'06 that is an awesome gun for $700. Many say they are better than today's Sakos that of course go for much more. Beautiful bluing.
 
Sako's are by far the best out of the box production rifles made today. They are generaly out of Bubba's price range, or at least what he thinks he should spend, so he brags on his winchester or Remington or Ruger ETC... because he's never shot a Sako or had any experiance with them. I have 12 and they all were sub moa out of the box with the bullit I wanted to shoot!:what: Wheres my flame suit?:banghead:

So true, but will offend the Remchesterby fanboys.
 
Fancy walnut is much like art. Its attractiveness is often subjective. If I were going to spend a decent chunk of change on a high grade walnut stocked rifle, I'd want to see it first. There is NOTHING more appealing in the shooting world than a blued bolt action rifle with a nicely figued walnut stock.

Used to be that every now and then you'd stumble across a nice standard grade walnut stock. I had a Marlin Guide Gun with a beautiful tiger striped stock. Every now and then a Ruger #1 will show up with gorgeous wood. I see less and less character in standard grade walnut as time passes.
 
Yes i'm looking for a stock with highly figured walnut. I referenced the Benelli shotguns because it seems like they usually come with beautiful stocks. You are right about some standard stocks being very nice. Last week I saw a mossberg patriot with a gorgeous stock. Couldn't believe it. Was tempted to buy it but the bluing is matte and not what i'm looking for.

After seeing pictures of beautiful winchester supergrades online, I drove 75 miles today to a gunstore that had a few in stock. I fully expected to be back home with a new rifle today but after seeing the rifles in person i was really disappointed. Beautiful polished bluing, but the stocks were nothing like what i've been seeing online. All of them had straight grain, nothing fancy at all. I guess i may be taking a serious look at those Sako's after all.
