My buffer is banging away on the detente pin in my AR15. I've already broken one pin. I don't think it is supposed to work that way. I thought the pin is just to keep the buffer and spring from flying out when you open the action. Can someone tell me what's going on here?

There are many different buffer weights and springs available, you might have to do a little research to find the right combination for your rifle. If your rifle is used then you might just have to buy a new buffer spring.

I went to a neighborhood smith and he told me not to worry about it. I don't buy that. I read recently that a heavier buffer is generally better. Nonetheless, the buffer and spring are meant to return the bolt carrier and I don't believe the detente pin is designed arrest the motion of the buffer. Anybody know a good AR smith in Texas?

Buffers have no effect except for full auto. That said, the detent pin shouldn't break, even on full auto. It doesn't normally have any real force on it. Something is off.

You are right that the buffer should not be hitting the pin when assembled with a BCG in front of it. Same thing happened to a friend of mine on a new build; we assumed the detent hole was not properly located and he exchanged the lower. Not sure what else could cause it but it's definitely not right.

You may have hit it, "Ifishsum," this piece has an RR upper and the lower is by an outfit in Kent Washington. it was put together by a fellow here in town. The same fellow who told me the dinged buffer is not a problem.

I assume we are talking about the the buffer retainer. Its sole purpose is to keep the buffer parts in place when the gun is opened. The buffer should not even touch the retainer when the gun is closed and operating normally.

Yep, just may be that the well for the detene pin is off spec. I plan to take it to a qualified smith. Thanks guys.

I believe the retainer holds the buffer in the receiver extension even when the upper is closed. There is always a gap between the carrier and the buffer.

Jim K is correct.

Under normal conditions the BCG will push the buffer back just a hair when closed. There should be no contact with the retainer and buffer when in the closed position. May want to check to see if the BCG is contacting the buffer. It's possible you may have a bolt out of spec too.
