686-3 Trade Help!

Not for nothing, but....

I own an early 586 and for what it is worth, it had a damn good trigger straight out of the box. Now that it has digested a good amount of .38spl and magnums the trigger is oh so nice! I cannot for the life of me imagine an exposed hammer S&W needing "a lot of trigger work".

I am glad for you this registered on your BS meter.

Thanks for the input everyone! I found a 686-1 listed locally and spoke to the guy on the phone about it. He said that he has never abused a revolver, knows about the checkout procedure, and said his is a good one. The screws aren't perfect in the pictures, which I asked him about, and he said he thinks its because some previous owner perhaps opened it up for cleaning :scrutiny:...at this point maybe I should just accept the fact that I'll be buying new screws if I end up with a used revolver.

I'd be tossing in a VX1 3-9x40 that I got for free a year ago (the SWFA photography contest) and $100 cash. I think its worth it considering I'm only in the CZ $415, and I really have no use for the VX1. He's including 250rds of factory 38spl, a leather OWB holster, two speed loaders, and a leather caddy for the speed loaders. He said the stocks are period correct, NOS and that they cost him $100. Vintage grips seem to go for a little less from what I can see on eBay, but some have sold previously for over $120.

Most importantly, he said it hasn't had any trigger work done that he is aware of..I'm about to send him a message asking if the hammer drops when he pushes on it with his finger off the trigger..hopefully it checks out, it sounds better than the last one. We are meeting tomorrow afternoon or potentially Tuesday.

If it doesn't work out, I'm thinking I'll just pick up a new 686+. That way there's no BS with the infamous "previous owner", and everything will be supposedly perfect. Although I'm sure people have gripes with the new guns beyond the lock...maybe you folks could fill me in on what exactly stinks about a new Smith compared to an old one beyond the new lock?

Cheers,
-TNG

The older smiths just look nicer. The lock, the MIM black trigger and hammer, the firing pin on the frame. The older ones just look classier and will command a higher price.

I bought a near perfect 686-1 like 5 years ago for $525. Sold it for a profit for some dumb reason. But I know I couldn't replace it for what I sold it for. Should have hung onto that one.

Ended up with the above pictured 686-1! It passed everything in the checks and is really nice, except for the screws which I plan to replace. Like I said, everything checked out on it so I think a bubba somewhere opened it for cleaning

I might have it out tomorrow for some shooting, I'm sure it'll do well!

Came with 200rds of reman 158gr TMJ 38spc, 50 rounds of Blazer 357, and 20 rounds of winchester pdx.

See I told you things would work out okay and you would get your Model 686! Appears to be pretty nice from the photos and you got plenty of "stuff" to go with it. Hope it shoots as good as it looks!

If up to snuff you won't find a full house .357 that is a better shooter (unless you are a very well heeled Python, Korth, Manhurin snob, even then it's debatable. After spending that kind of jack you need to convince yourself it was worth it.). The rubber Pachmayrs are actually nice when spending a day shooting full house magnums, but Smith and Wesson Magna grips are a necessity to have as a purist. Congrats!:D You did very well!

P.S. I once killed a fair size doe with it's twin at 35 yards. Nowadays I would not trust my eyes and would probably choose your DW 15 and 180 gr. Buffalo Bore hardcast, but if you are up to it the revover will do its part.

I guess.

I've got plenty of all three and I never had to convince myself they're worth it. I know why they cost what they do, as you get what you pay for.

I did own a 686 at one time and it was a good shooter, but just about all my S&W's these days are old 5-screw models. Smith & Wesson really built some nice stuff back then.

Different strokes for differet folks (and bank accounts). I still maintain that's a keeper! The introduction of the L frame for this model was the last stroke of S&W genius MIM be damned. This will digest enough to give a Model 19 heartburn and ask for more. One of the best S&W actions, great accuracy, what more do you need?
