I am trying to do a little upgrading on a Springfield 308 Scout Squad. Bought it new with 10, 15, & 20 round mags. All mags are very hard to insert and remove. I filed, sanded, and polished the stock around the insert port as changing the mags was leaving deep gouges. This helped. I still have to invert the gun and pound the mag in after getting it started into the steel frame. I don't mean just slap it hard to snap it in. I mean really pound hard. Sometimes it takes two or three trys to cram it in. I recently bought a new mag to see if it was any better. Nope...Same deal. Anyone dealt with this before? Any help much appreciated•

The first three mags for my Scout Squad.
The 10 round came with the gun from Cheaper Than Dirt.
The 15 and 20 round mags came after purchase from Cheaper Than Dirt.
The last 15 round mag came a couple of weeks ago from Midway USA.

The reason I ask what brand is that the M1A can be finicky with mags. I have a "no name" 20 rounder that acts just like yours.

However, all of the mags I have from http://www.checkmatemagazines.com/ load and feed flawlessly.

That experience has been stated fairly consistently among most M1A owners. Again, see what brands you have and let us know. If they are CMI mags I'd say it's the rifle, if not I'd say it's the mags

My 20 round mag is stamped Check Mate.
The others are "no name". The ten round mag came with the gun from Springfield. It has deep scoring gouges in the top side near the front about 1/2 inch long. All feel the same to me as far as ease of insertion.

Ok...Here's what I did; I disassembled each mag. Then using 340 wet-or-dry sandpaper , I removed the parkerized finish on the top 1 inch of each mag. The finish was about as rough as 400 grit sandpaper. Then I used a jewers file to smooth out the sharp edges all the way around the top of the mags. Then using 600 grit wet-or-dry, I polished the top 1 inch of each mag. Using Hoppes Barrel Blaster, I cleaned and wiped all the surfaces inside and out. Finally I used white Lithium Grease and worked it in thoroughly inside and out of all the surfaces. I wiped away any excess and reassembled the mags. I carefully checked fit and function of each mag, loaded and empty. I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER.
A side note: After disassembling the mags, I found that the 20 round Mag from Cheaper Than Dirt had deen tinkered with and was improperly assembled. It took 30 minutes working with it to match it up with the other mags. When this rain lets up I will try out each mag. I need to sight in the forward mounted scope anyhow. If I knew how to, I'd include a photo. If it is possible, I'd appreciate a note about photos. Thanks

I had this exact issue with scout model 8 years ago. Called Springfield. They give return number and free shipping. They fixed it and problem is gone. Just give them a call. Their customer support is top notch.
