What's the oddest thing you've used for gun lube. ,

I lubed a gun with coconut oil after rumors that it was the base for Froglube.

Not as gun oil, but as reloading lube I regularly use Pam cooking spray. I guess the craziest I have gotten with oiling a gun was with a 16 ga pump that the oil was gummed up in at about 5 degrees f...so I opened the drain plug on the trucks oil pan about a turn and dribbled scalding hot oil into the action to un-gum it.

But to keep it on the rails, I guess I'm not very adventurous. I only use products labeled for guns as gun lube, figuring that at least somebody thought they were applicable.

I use the old standby, Mobil 1, for a grease I use Lucas red grease.

Not a lube but for my walnut stocked rifles I polish the stocks with brown shoe polish.

I use silicon lube for the moving parts on my press. A while back I ran out of Oneshot and grabbed a an of CRC Silicon lubricant from the shelf. It works really well...actually too well. The cases are ridiculously slippery and transfered from the brass to my fingers, from fingers to trigger, bolt handle, safety etc. The stuff took forever to finally wear off.

Wojo, just curious, but why would you want a lubricant for your gun to be sticky?

Mobil 1 full synthetic is about as crazy as I've gotten.

I personally use Royal Purple synthetic oil, Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Red and stinky, wonder if it is the same as Lucas red grease? Back when the pistol manufacturers were having trouble running stainless on stainless, Crisco was the lube of choice on ss 1911's.

I use my patch lube for my blackpowder guns and as a water repellant on all my firearms it's beeswax, Crisco, canola oil and lanolin.

WD-40, I don't recommend it. I learned the hard way, it gummed up a S&W 66 after a summer of shooting pretty good.

I've used bore butter for lube before. it worKS better as a protectant for surfaces.

Birchwood Casey gun oil. True story

GI insect repellent in Ranger school on a M60. 90% asleep at the time- wrong bottle. When someone pointed out what I just did, I just shrugged. It worked.

I haven't used it yet....but this winter I plan on doing some sub-zero tests with Meyer snow plow fluid. It's a light viscosity, slick as snot, and should keep things from freezing solid.

Currently I have a couple pistol slides lubed with a 50/50 mix of STP and 10-30

Beat me to it, used crankcase oil from a dipstick, almost always available,

I was at an auto parts store and saw Lucas red gun oil. I bought in on a whim.

I gotta say, that stuff stays-put and doesn't migrate... but not tacky. Seems pretty slickery to the touch too.

I used some skin oil off my nose one time. I had bought a pair of S&W 6904s off Gunbroker and got them right before a trip to the range so took them along. Did a function check on them and while they were clean they were dry, dry, dry. Tried to run a magazine through the first one and it wasn't going into battery after the first shot.....took it apart but didn't have any lube in my range bag so used some nose grease from each side of my nose (it was kinda hot and the end of a long day).......rubbed it the on the rails and feed ramp and that did the trick.

Fryer oil

Was shooting a old model Remington 48 for a pheasant hunt.

The gun would stop function after each round [ semi auto ].

The older gentleman that was sponsoring me that day,took my gun to the kitchen and used fryer oil to lube the slide & spring = worked great too.

DEET is pretty dang greasy/oily all by its lonesome, and I believe the carrier fluid in a lot of sprays is basically mineral oil, so I'm not surprised it worked. No mosquitoes clogging up the bolt carrier group, either (though I'll bet your face/lips got a tad numb after the first few shots sprayed DEET mist all over your face )

But I guess M1 carbines had to come from somewhere!!!

The weirdest thing I've used to lube guns is lamb's tallow. I use it for patch/wad lube for my black powder guns. Works great, but every time I smell it (has a meaty kind of smell) I think of Lamb Chop the puppet getting rendered!!!

Oddest? Eh, off the top of my head probably wheel bearing grease.
