Skunk sprayed my Labrador

Well, today was the first day I could sneak out for a dove shoot with my old man and chocolate lab. Usual have decent amount of birds at this particular farm. Today was different. 30 minutes into the hunt I saw a skunk emerge from the ditch. I yelled oh crap! Old man thought birds were coming in. I peppered the skunk three times with 12 gauge 1 oz 8 shot. Nothing. My lab decided to dispatch it... sprayed. That really ticked the dog off. So he bit the skunk and shook it near death. Two more sprays from the skunk and daddy finished it off with two more shells.

Talk about the most horrific putrid rancid smell. Wouldn't wish that smell on my wrote enemy.

Anybody else have a dog/skunk experience?
 
No, fortunately, my German Shorthair never encountered a skunk when we were hunting. What did you do to get the smell out?
 
I had a bad skunk experience with my Yellow Lab last year. I let him outside one night & he immediately darted into the yard instead of calmly walking like he usually does. I heard a commotion & he immediately ran back into the house, smelling like burned rice mixed with some type of chemical. He started rubbing his face on a bed and several pairs of shoes I had to throw away. That night I had him sleep in the laundry room. The next morning I did some research on the internet & mixed a solution of vinegar, peroxide & Dawn soap to bathe him in - three times. It worked on him, but that laundry room smell took four months to go away & that was AFTER throwing the bed & frame away & washing the floor, walls & windows several times with vinegar.

Since he ran upstairs, I sprinkled baking soda everywhere on that floor, let it sit for two days & vacuumed.

I warned my sister that a skunk was hanging around so she would be careful when letting her Chocolate Lab out. She said, "My dog is smart enough not to go near a skunk."
HAHAHAHA. A few weeks later, her Lab was nailed by the skunk.
 
My blue Heeler has killed 2, and gotten sprayed both times. Vile is a understatement.
Getting sprayed has not deterred him the least. It is important to wash there eyes out , the spray can blind your dog.
Open season on skunk as far as I am concerned.
 
You gotta shoot 'em in the head, or they will spray. We used to skunk hunt up at our cabin-Dad and I would sit on the fenders of the 'ol wagon, Mom would drive down the dirt roads slow with the high beams on. I learned real fast to hit 'em in the head.
 
Ive had a couple dogs sprayed. Last one really really didn't like it. when she saw another one she barked at it but wouldn't get too close. I shoot all I can to thin them out. They've been part of what was considered a rabies epidemic in the past. I knew two guys that were chased by skunks. They managed to kill them and they turned out to be rabid.

The old thing about tomato juice helping with skunk spray works. Perhaps not as good as something else, but its gotten about 90% or so of the stink off my dogs, at least I could stand to let them in the house afterwards. I keep several large jugs of it around just for skunk spray problems.

30-30 works spectacularly on skunks. Sort of makes them turn inside out. Any centered body hit works fine. Don't be too close when it happens though. Its sort of messy.
 
What I heard from a co-worker whose dog got sprayed is that Coca Cola works well to get the smell out. The dog is washed with Coca Cola which is allowed to dry after which the dog is washed again.
 
I'm thinking it is the acidity of the cola that helps. People use it to clean toilets and I have had success using it to degrease carharts that I wore for work.

Lots and lots! Throw the dog in the tub grab a quart of peroxide and mix it with 2 tablespoons of your favorite smelling dish soap and (I think) around a cup of baking soda and hand scrub it onto the dry dog, rinse and regular shampoo and rinse and done just watch out for the eyeballs pm me and I'll find the exact measurements of the ingredients for you if you'd like our dogs usually wind up with a faint faint odor around their face but that's due to our cautiousness good luck and I do truly feel for you and the pup that skunk spray is literally potentially lethal look up the msds sheet on it!
 
Bout 10 years ago I woke up on a rare cool July morning to the smell of major skunk funk. Our windows were open and the youngest golden retriever had taken a full on blast in the yard. I think we did the hydrogen peroxide mix and it sorta knocked down the smell.
The worst part was that we were taking her and another of the dogs to the vet for boarding that day. :eek:
They, the vet's staff, took it in stride and didn't charge too much for the bath... ;)
 
Wash your dog in a mix of dish soap and peroxide and throw in some baking soda. After a couple of washes the smell will greatly diminish.

I have used this on my dog. It works. Tomato juice didn't do squat.
 
Peroxide and baking soda reacts to a foam that helps clean. Dishsoap washes away. I unfortunately keep some in hand. Seems like my little husky mix doesn't learn. I had a samoyed years ago that it didn't bother at all, she would grab shake and walk away like nothing happened. Not a house dog thiugh.
 
Yep! Last January we had one get under the house and spray. Had to vacate the house for three days until we could air it out. Had to throw away our expensive Tempurpedic bed. At that point I declared jihad and have killed 17 skunks in the last 7 months. Two trapped, the rest shot, mostly with my 10/22. I have found nowhere on a skunks body that a bullet will prevent spraying, so I don't bother trying to head shoot them.

In my experience, there's only a few things that eliminate skunk odor. Father Time, bleach and gasoline.

You could probably get a color alteration with the peroxide, but what's the alternative.
The skunk spray is mostly made of oil, hence the dawn dish soap.
Tomato juice does not remove the odor. After having your olfactory overloaded washing a skunk dog, it just gets used to the smell. It's not gone, you just think it is.
Others will still smell it.
I had my Bully sprayed, the peroxide mixture works.

Disagree with this. Its worked pretty well on my dogs. I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell, I was still able to smell the skunk, though faintly a day after, but other people said they couldn't.
 
Tomato juice was a classic favorite for removing eau de skunk.
Back in the 1970s my sister had a dog named "Nikki," a smallish long haired breed (I forget what breed) that was pretty dumb. Got sprayed by a skunk, and my sister had to clean the dog up.
The dog, once cleaned, went back outside.
The **** dog found the skunk AGAIN and -- you guessed it -- got a second helping.
Nikki was a nice dog. Friendly. Affectionate.
Not terribly bright ....

Our Italian Greyhounds have had several nocturnal encounters with skunks here on our farm. Not pleasant. The dogs have learned to leave them alone probably because of both the odor and the cure. They hate baths.:)

My wife uses a variation of markallen's wash. Peroxide, Dawn, and something that smells good.

After a couple washings, a hint of skunk is still there but not offensive. The odor is usually pretty much gone by morning.

Which one do you want to hear about?

Our Pit Bull/Boxer mix is a playful dog, and she usually stays in the house at night with us. We'll let her out for a while before we go to bed, then let her back in. On more than one occasion, she's come to the door and it was painfully obvious she'd had a rendezvous with one of those stinking black and white rats. Our lawn is fenced in, and she considers it her domain; anything inside the fence, opossum, raccoon, squirrel, neighbor's cat, or skunk, is fair game and won't survive. I've carted more dead critters out of the lawn than I care to remember.

I don't mind removing the dead animals, but getting rid of the stench on her can be a challenge.
 
Here's a bad skunk story. A really stupid skunk dug a hole under the back of our outhouse and fell in!! With flashlight and .22 in hand we located the hapless skunk and shot him a few times. Talk about bad smell...PUUUU!!! We did the only thing we could, moved the outhouse and buried the whole sorry mess. Good thing I was in grade school across the street. The whole family used the grade school bathrooms for a couple of weeks.
 
1 pint bottle 3% hydrogen peroxide
2T baking soda
2t hand dishwashing soap

Don't mix it up beforehand cause it don't last. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the dog liberally.

Holy skunkcrap Batman! That's a lotta skunks. Gonna have to change your username to the "Skunk Whisperer". Yesterday we helped our youngest son move back to college...about a 300 mile round trip. Had to be more than 20 dead skunks on the road. Must be the season for them to be active.
