I thought some of you might get a kick out of this! It really helps keep the barrel cooler on my 225 viper. I usually chamber it for 2-3 minutes between shots at the range. normal old walmart bait bubbler. drilled the primer pocket out on one of my old cases, and shoved the air hose in all the way to the neck. Just chamber it like a live round, turn it on. I pull it out by the hose and shoot again! This may not work too well on a bigger bore, but it gets fair airflow down a 22 bore. 50 grains of Win 760 down this barrel gets warm in a hurry without it. Got 40's running 4,500 though.

I built it on a TC encore platform, so it is pretty easy to take in and out, but it should feed into a bolt gun fairly easy also. It runs on 2- D batteries. I got the idea from keeping crappie shiners alive on hot days!

I love it! Think ill give it a whirl. Thanks for the idea.

Your welcome! I thought it might help the PD shooters with their swifts and short mags.

I just use one those 12 volt air mattress pumps that plugs into the lighter socket ... the one I got has a hose with a tapered end that will fit many chambers ... it doesn't take long with the flow rate that this thing has ...

I know someone will ask where you plug it in ... I have my own 100 yd range in my yard and I have my JD Gator there always and it has a 12 v outlet ... the pickup would work too ...

One of these days, a rifle company will figure out that fixing the common problem of barrels bending from heat and putting bullets some direction from point of aim is a good idea. They could do it easily and cover all costs and make a profit for an extra $50 to $60 per rifle. Once set up on their receiver production line, it would take 5 to 10 minutes labor each.

The solution could also easily make more sales when their ads mention that rifle doesn't have the shot impact walking as barrels heat up.

How many of them know what the cause is and what they need to do to fix it? Like gunsmiths, some don't. Most rifle shooters don't know, either.

Once done but the barrel still walks shot impact as it heats up, then the barrel's not stress relieved.

Stress is caused by button rifling among other things. The most effective way to stress relieving is to heat the barrel up to just below its transformation stage. The crystalline structure then becomes more uniform.

I think cryogenic stress relief is a good icing on a good cake of normal stress relieving mentioned above. It "freezes" the steel structure a little more so it stays stable overs greater temperature range as the barrel heats up faster.

Kreiger Barrels web site explains it well. I've worn out a few Kreiger barrels and they've never walked shot impact over 25 to 30 shots fired 20 to 30 seconds apart.

Properly stress relieved barrels fit to correctly faced receivers don't change the various frequencies and directions they vibrate at as they heat up and keep the same grain structure. Poorly fit ones have a stress line at their tight spot on the receiver that ends up pointing the muzzle axis at the wrong place at bullet exit.

Want to improve it's efficiency, add a coil of copper in the line and put the coil in a small styrofoam case filled with ice or frozen "gel" blocks. Especially good if the ambient air temp is up near 100 degrees.

I don't have that cartridge, but I do have a .22 middlestead. It uses .243 win brass and in turns shrinks the neck down and reshapes the shoulder angle. I am getting right at 3400 fps with 75gr berger vld bullets over 43 gr of imr 7828. This combo will put whitetail deer down really hard.
