I can't help but notice that the usual demonization of the weapon used in the crime is missing in this case. If it were a semi-auto handgun with higher-than-comfort-level capacity magazines or a semi-auto rifle of a certain design type, that would be the lead sentence in the coverage.

In this case, a small caliber semi-auto rifle was used (probably .22, the reporting has been unclear on this). Since this does not fit the narrative of the AR style of gun that is currently being targeted for a ban in Washington and Oregon, the discussion of the weapon is curiously missing or buried in all news reporting of this story.

This crime seems to cut the legs out from under the argument that banning certain types of firearms and magazines can solve the problem of mass shootings. Has anybody noticed this in the coverage?

I also noticed that many of the news outlets covering this story do not have a comment section for reader's responses. The 4th Estate is increasingly uninterested in any accountability in the coverage of these stories.

Yeah - in the one crappy picture, it looked like a .22 that had the barrel shortened and the rear of the stock off. I noticed exactly the same in the new coverage.

My takeaway is that the .22 semi-auto rifle used in this crime demolishes the argument that demonizes the "assault" rifle as the evil gun that must be banned. This guy broke several laws and a judge's order to obtain and use this rifle in a mass shooting. This brings us to the limit of what regulation can do. Regulation can set societal norms, but it cannot absolutely regulate behavior in all cases. Laws are for the law-abiding. To deal with violent criminals, we as individuals in society still need to be vigilant and ready to fight back.

Have they recovered the gun? I heard the video shows he didn't enter the mall with an obvious gun and he escaped from the scene.

If it had been an AR, the coverage would obsess on ARs.

If it had been a state with no UBC, the coverage would have been how UBC would have prevented it.

WA has I594 UBC law and it was a common "hunting style" rifle not a "weapon of war".

In most murders motive and opportunity are more important than means; and it should be the actor who is held responsible for the outcome.

It turns out the gun was a .22 Ruger. It is hard to tell from the published surveillance picture showing the gun if the barrel is shortened or just lost in the gray background. 29 Dec a judge had forbidden Arcan Cetin to possess firearms (three DV complaints); the rifle was stolen from his father w/o a UBC.

Most coverage I've seen that mention the weapon (which he laid on the counter after the shooting and walked out) call it a "hunting style" rifle. Some commenters claim the toll would have been higher if he had used an AR but I doubt that. It emerges he was bitter over a break up with a girlfriend who worked at Macy's and the four women and man he shot may have been his only intended victims.

The motive for the shooting that killed four women and a man remains unclear. Authorities said Cetin's ex-girlfriend used to work at the store but hasn't in several months and now lives in another county. KING 5 reported that Cetin was in possession of three guns Friday night. all legally purchased, but Cetin stole them from a family member. The weapon used Friday night was a .22 Ruger, according to law enforcement, KING 5 reported.

Absolutely different coverage. I've checked in with a few MSM rags that normally cover every single nuance of an "assault rifle" shooting. They've covered the base incident in this case but no updates, not interested. The only followup I've seen is reporting that social media types are having a fit over the initial misreporting of the shooter's ethnicity.

The Brookline MA abortion clinic shooter used a 10/22 with a folding stock and a 25 round magazine. That was decades ago.
The only mention as to this cretan's weapon I saw was it was a hunting rifle. Look out there Elmer Fudd your guns are next. =o

Yes, it would have been a big fiasco If it was an AR used. I personally think the whole event was kept controlled by the media. A Spanish looking guy was first reported because everyone would have went nuts I'd they heard he was from Turkey.

The official pictures are really odd. You can make out details like individual fingers, creases in dresses, muscles in the perps arm, but you cant even half clearly see the weapon, its just a tiny muddy blur.... Something fishy here when all the other details are pretty clear....:uhoh::scrutiny:

I have surveillance cameras at home. Moving objects show up blurry compared to fixed (the guy was walking with the rifle so it was moving). I have a hard time reading the license plates on cars unless they stop or get real close to the camera.

It seemed to me too that national coverage was lacking. It is all over the local news. No evil black rifle here and as others have said, we have UBCs now.

Absolutely smells of fish ! Very little news coverage here , if an immigrant is involved seems to be down played , this one came from turkey I believe , his shirt was blurred out ? 5 dead
Including 4 teenage girls and it seems as if it's ho hum just another day , The mall stabbing as well, immigrant just think we are letting them all in they are your friend they say !!
So yes it's being down played , I believe it's the media for Hillary , think about it police officer shoots someone main stream media presidential speech, immigrant shoots 5 or more no problem little coverage.

-Non-military rifle
-Non-US citizen
-Weekend event
-Immediately before presidential debate
--Terror attacks (or crimes resembling them) undermine support for ruling party
-Scale/scope of the attack is not particularly notable
-Very little information on the attack/attacker early on (literally just a poor photo and some victims, from what I could tell) so little to do reporting with

There's a whole host of reasons this attack will likely not get huge coverage, regardless of the terrorism angle be true or not. Most likely he just went off his nut as people seem to do rarely, seeing as the apparent motive is largely nonsense & he was taken into custody in a catatonic state (has been seen to be very typical for psychotic break attackers)

Oh, so you can identify the make/model of his pants? Because that's the level of detail you're seeking for the firearm. The video was terrible, since I guess surveillance lenses are always wide angle & destroy the resolution of any one subject being filmed. Does it occur to you the reason for the muted coverage may be that there was very, very little information about the incident for the first couple dozen hours after the guy escaped? "He killed four people, then got away; that is all we know" --yeah, not very 'entertaining' from a news perspective

One teenage girl, not 4. Not sure what TV, radio you listen to but for the first 24 hours it was about all that was covered.

4 female 1 male SHOT DEAD !
Dead is dead on any news channel and it's not ok !
My prayers go to their family's ,

The guy had an arrest record and they had the gun found at the scene with prints???
He had an arrest record for violence. Why was he not deported? Where did he get the gun?
The teens mother had to speak through an interpreter, was there some relationship with the underage immigrant girl?
Lots of questions that we probably will never hear answers to.

He had a no firearms order issued to him. He had the gun illegally. Maybe this will be the first time for 594 to get violated?

A law and never prevented crime, every crime ever committed was against the law.

They don't deport for example we had our house broken in and cleaned us out , neighbors ID'd this guy police found him and they knew him as he has a long fellon arest record with convictions and he is here in an expired visa the DA told me that he will go to Jaill then released back to the street as they are not allowed to deport anyone under this federal administration and their hands are tied until he kills someone, this administration protects
Immigrant Fellons and they are not deported this is what the prosecuting DA told me
He was very fusterated in the failed system, even the officer told me take the report for insurance and be happy because the court will HAVE To release him.
I really blame this federal administration they unwilling / protect immigrant Fellons until someone is killed and then say don't rush to conclusions !!
This is what I have been told by officers and the court system it self , we really need change or this will continue to happen over and over

Next time, get it on tape, Jo Jo. It's also likely the state's fault as much as the feds (I assume by this time WA has become as bad as CA in obstructing justice between local/federal when it comes to illegal aliens)

Yet, more more example of the dangers of "No Gun Zones"
Another example of Background Checks (especially UBC) that do not work
Another example of the "weapons of war" is just propaganda

We need to get more people to understand facts rather than feel good laws. We must do everything possible to keep the courts from being filled with anti-gun judges.
