Just received a variety of 3/8 ar500'gongs in the mail today. I purchased 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and a 12" 1/2" gong for rifle. Set up a couple on my range. I was surprised what the splatter could do. The first couple shots with a 22 punctured my paint can I left below the gongs. I left the can there and shot some more 22 along with 50 9mm rounds. There was also lead splatter peppering the straps i used to mount them. Definitely tells me to angle down and shoot at a reasonable distance away.

I worked at a shop that had an indoor range. We would have shooters get cuts on the face and arms from bullet jackets that came back.

Wood chips or hay bales under the targets help absorb splash fragments coming down vertically off the target face. You can pile hay bales on either side to catch horizontal splatter. Tilting the target slightly face down is also a smart thing to go. Cowboy Action targets are at handshake range sometimes; eliminating splatter can be challenging.

I have been hit on the lense of my safety glasses several times with spatter - also got a few tiny cuts on my face and a couple on my arms.
This is why we wear eye protection.

Also, if you use 2x4s for your target stands, the spatter will stick into the wood. It is a good idea to wear gloves when handling the stand.
