Hey all,
Deer firearm season here in indiana will be here shortly and i bought be a raging bull in 454 for it. Ive been shooting nothing but hornady factory loads which is also the hottest factory loads you can get for the 454. I was curious if anybody has taken game with the 240 grain 454 factory loads.
To me 1900ft/sec is high for handgun bullet and im in fear that they just wont hold up. If anybody has taken game with the 454 what round did you use and how did it hold up? Yes im aware i can shoot 45colt out of it but its just as exspensive to shoot with less power.

The Hornady 240 gr XTP-Mag is made specifically for the .454 with a heavier jacket than those .45 caliber bullets intended for .45 Colt. I have used them in my .460, but prefer their 300 gr XTP-Mags. Both are capable of extreme accuracy. I have not taken any deer with the 240, but have with the 300s. You have nuttin' to worry about except making the shot. You do your part, the bullet will do it's.

I was thinking the 300s would be better, but many deer have been taken with a 44mag loaded 240s so i wasnt concerned about wright but with it shedding javkrt or fragmenting. Good to hear though! Hope i get a deer this year. Not only will it be my first(indiana deer caliber restrictions suck) but it will be my first animal taken with a handgun

I have killed plenty of animals with the 240gn Hornady XTP in a S&W .460.

Great penetration. I wish I could describe the expansion, but I have never recovered a 240gn XTP from an animal. However, exit wounds tend to be about golf ball sized.

I use the 300gn now like amc317 because I can basically add 60 gn of bullet weight with no sacrifice in accuracy, but the 240 did well for me back then.

I run the XTP Mags (300gn) out of my muzzleloader now and they do just fine. Speed is 1900fps chronoed, similar velocity to your 460. All have been pass throughs except this one which was a frontal shot.

The above Impala was taken with one shot and dropped dead where it stood.

Bullet recovered from the above Impala. You guys get too uptight about how fast the bullet is going and about whether it gives the perfect mushroom. It was a Hornady 250 grain SST/ML bullet shot out of a 460 S&W Magnum handgun at about 2,350 fps.

Ah, but you say, an Impala is a small antelope and you're right but a Zebra isn't small; more like 750 lbs.

A Red Hartebeest isn't small either.

Neither is a European Fallow Deer.

I've also taken a lot more animals with that bullet.

So, there is nothing to worry about with a 240 or 300 gr. XTP Mag on deer. Your recovered bullets may even look pretty.

Thanks guys for your imput, i just was not sure that the bullet would hold up to a high velocity. Alot of hollowpoints dont hold up to high velocitys it seems like
