I pulled my brand new, unfired STAINLESS 10/22 out of a Bob Allen rifle case I had stored it in since purchase a couple years ago, as I'm going to take it to the range for the first time tomorrow. Before I stored it, I had given all the metal parts a light coating of CLP. I pulled it out and part of the barrel and both sling mounts were covered in rust. No other guns that I have and had stored in the same area in other soft and hard cases had any rust on them, including blued ones.

So much for "Intercept corrosion technology." :cuss:

Fortunately I was able to take all of the rust off with a melamine foam block, but there is still some faintly visible scarring from the pattern of rust. On an unfired gun.

Nah, if it was the CLP, not only would the other guns be rusted, but the entire barrel would have been uniformly rusted and not just the part that was touching the bottom of the case.

You can seal water in but you can't seal it out.

At least if there is zero moisture to start with. If you don't buy that drink all the water out of a bottle and put the lid back on, then put it in the sunlight.

That's why we put them in a safe with dehumidifiers.

It is best to get them out and away from the foam and into a nice, cool and comfortable safe where the humidity is being controlled nicely.

Now you know why they tell you to never store a gun in foam case for extended periods of time. FYI stainless is actually, only stain resistant. It will rust eventually. Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

I use soft side gun cases made by Ace and I keep one rifle in an Ace case for several months at a time and I never have any problems with rust. The Ace cases are the best I have found and you can buy the Ace cases on the internet. When all else fails just use a light coat of regular gun oil such as Outers or the spray can oil marketed by Browning. I don't know anything about the humidity in Pennsylvania buy my area is somewhat humid.

A couple of years of your neglect, and you bad mouth the case manufacturer? Deflect responsibility much?

I'm not deflecting at all. The Bob Allen case is/was specifically advertised as being safe for long term storage of firearms, because of its corrosion protection technology.

You think it's my fault that I took the company at its word? That I somehow neglected a firearm by leaving it stored in a case I bought specifically for that purpose?

If all my other guns were rusted, you might have a point. But this is how I've stored my guns for over a decade and none of them exhibited rust just from sitting, until now.

I have to back General Geoff on this. My daddy kept 2 shotguns in a lambskin case for over 45 years and the only thing i had to was the bolt of the pump. But I was doing a complete strip and rebuild.

All soft padded cases (and cardboard shipping boxes) should ONLY be used for transporting a firearm. They were never intended to be used for storage regardless of what any manufacturer may tell you - especially for years. When I did smithing work you would not believe how many beautiful old shotguns that were brought to the shop completely rusted because the owner had stored them in a soft case containing foam or fleece under their bed. You might get away with it in a very dry climate like Arizona but most of the time the result is rusted metal. If you open and then close the case just one time when the relative humidity happens to be over 50% you have just trapped moisture in with the gun. The best way to store any firearm is in a rack in the open exposed to climate controlled air or in a safe with dehumidification applied and closely monitored and with a thin coat of oil on the gun. If you fail to wipe every single fingerprint off with an oily rag after handling it those prints can be etched into the metal permanently. I would also advise owners to NEVER store a gun for years and never inspect its condition once in a while - even if it is not in a soft case. Rust never sleeps.
