Despite having a S&W Sport II, I know nothing about trigger groups.

My brother is gradually saving money for complete components-one at a time as money allows.
If I were to buy him the Complete trigger group, is there a brand somewhat "better than 'milspec' "(his words) for about $100 max.?

The goal would be to have a bit lighter or crisper pull.

Could you go up to $120? If so, RRA's two stage match trigger is excellent IMO.

I've also polished the engagement surfaces of a few of my cheap triggers (polish only, no grinding or removing metal) and have been very pleased with the results. Much smoother trigger pull, although it doesn't do much to increase crispness.

It is pretty easy to get a nice trigger with milspec parts. Depending on how nuts You go, you can get a 2lb crisp pull and never touch the sear surfaces. You can buy lighter springs or bend/clip yours. Run a set screw up the grip and you take out a lot of pretravel. File down the back of the trigger bar and you can take all of it out.

Or there are some cheap triggers advertised on slickguns.

RRA is probably your best bet right at $100 unless you can be patient and wait on a sale for larue or POF. The POF drop ins are great and can be had 120ish on sale. If you just want something better than a milspec trigger and want to save a few bucks the ALG ACT and BCM PNT can be had for 60-70$

There is a polished trigger (maybe plated, don't remember) from PSA for either $29 or $39 depending upon whether it is on sale. I have not used it personally, but I have a friend that has and says it's excellent. I am getting one for my home AR.

I've got several of the PSA NIB triggers. A set of JP yellow springs makes all the difference, with a clean, crisp 4 pound break. I highly recommend this trigger.

I have several of the enhanced triggers from PSA and a couple of similar triggers from somewhere else. They're better than milspec, but they aren't much better in my opinion. I ordered a couple of the LaRue MBT's when they were on sale for $99 a while back and they blow the enhanced triggers out of the water. Very crisp two stage triggers that come with an extra trigger spring if you like your trigger a little heavier. Very well made and an excellent buy even at the regular price.

RA-140 can be had for $99 shipped if you look around and wait for it to go on "sale."
I have one. I like it a lot. I've plans to buy at least 2 more.

I'd give ALG a look. Their ACT trigger is pretty nice. Basically a smooth, crisp usgi trigger.

BCM and Sionics also have some nice triggers that are similar to that.

I recently asked the same question and after some research ended up ordering a Larue... unfortunately missed the sale, but still not too expensive compared to most at ~130 delivered if you pick the slow option... mine shipped in about a month and should be here early next week. If it is as good as everything else I've ever bought from Larue I won't be disappointed.

The other one I was looking hard at was the Giessele SSA or -E, but, opinions seemed to be 50/50 toss up vs. the Larue on Arfcom, and the price difference is substantial. So if I'm happy with the Larue I'll probably wait for them to go on sale again and then order a couple more.

I just noticed my JP yellow trigger spring has a bent leg. Is that how it came? I couldn't remember.

I bought the Anderson kit with stainless hammer and trigger. Surprisingly it was far better than the ones claiming to be milspec and cheaper, too. I suspect they are MIM parts - which don't have a highly enthusiastic following - but with due consideration MIM leaves a smooth surface free of grinding or shaping marks which is what all the higher end kits go thru - stoning out the cheap tooling marks.

That could be luck of the draw, for a much better chance of a decent trigger I'd vote ALG too. Very few negative remarks about their pull or price can be found.

If you're not shooting CMP/NRA-HP (this ends up too light for competition standards), the Rock River National Match 2 Stage or Varminter trigger can be had on sale for $80-100 pretty regularly. Throw a set of JP springs into it for $13 (have to drill out the staked/peened disconnector pivot). You have the option to leave the hammer spring alone if you're using a lot of surplus mil-spec stuff and itch about light strikes - I've never had one light strike when using this combination even with the lightened hammer springs on a couple dozen rifles, but some people worry more than others.

I've used/owned/installed AR-Gold, Timney, ALG, Anderson, DPMS, Bushmaster National Match, Rock River, LaRue, Geiselle, Hyperfire, and I'm sure a few others I'm forgetting - the Bushmaster NM 2 stage, RRA Varmint and NM, and Geiselle are the only triggers I'll buy for myself. Many work, and work well, but for my money, if I'm going ~$100 - it's RRA, if I can FIND one, I like the Bushmaster 2 stage, and if I'm spoiling myself with a proper trigger with NO complaints possible, it's the Geiselle.

I like the Rock River also, and have one in my 18" Bison 223 Wylde build with yellow springs. I use Wolf/Tula SRM primers, and they all go bang.

Also have a CMMG 2-stage with yellow springs in my 6.8 build, that I was given by a dealer to evaluate. It doesn't have quite as light pull as the RR, but has a cleaner break.

A friend who retired from the Navy Rifle Team (years ago) also mentioned the Rock River for about $100.

I could spend a bit more, and will send these suggestions to my brother. He won't have the money for the upper or lower for weeks, it seems.
Thanks very much for your time and descriptions.

One of the best buys going for "standard" trigger is the BCM lower parts kits that includes their plated trigger set. It is $99, with the possibility of online purchase with a coupon from Brownells or whoever with a bit of a discount. Plus the kit includes their Mod 3 pistol grip which is my favorite on the market. Overall great value if you want an improved "standard" type trigger. I have used 3 of these kits and have been quite happy with them.

If you want a really nice, one of if not the best available, the Wilsons or pretty darn nice. I have samples of both the 3-Gun an 2-stage match. Excellent pull and the materials and workmanship seem unbeaten. Regular price is $270, but they go on sale a couple times per year for about $230.
