Hi Folks,
I just bought a new Savage MarkII 22 rifle from Wallyworld. I started the initial cleaning and inspection that I always do with any gun I get. When I got to the bore, noticed that it had been fired (probably tested at he factory) but the patches were showing a brown color. Have sent a few through now and all have some brown rust colored patches. Tried to look at the bore well but then my bore light broke. The bore does not look mirror bright but can't see any pits or obvious signs of corrosion ...so far. My guess is that it was fired to test, never cleaned and has been sitting on the shelf at Walmart for perhaps years. Any comments, advise?

More than likely it is lube which is in the bore. I have had the same thing happen to me in the past but it wasn't rust.

Yeah, last week I purchased a brand new S&W M&P 15-22 Performance Center, which my dealer had just gotten in. It took a long time to clean the bore of a reddish brown material, but the bore looks as perfect as anything I have ever seen. I'm sure it is just some sort of a preservative lube they put in at the factory. BTW, that rifle is a hoot to shoot! Grandkids love it!

All new firearms are shipped coated with a rust preventative. Needs to be cleaned off with normal cleaning solvents and methods.

that is normal with freshly cut steel to see a little rust. they might have put a coating in the barrel after it rusted a little. fresh cut steel will rust in an hour
