Ever had a bullet go by your head?

In my state, Mississippi, a couple years ago they made it legal to take off your orange when 12 feet up in a stand, or in a ground blind. I think this is very dangerous, If everything is flat it might not matter. If the deer is on ground higher than another hunter you may be in his/her line of fire even up a tree. Always wear your orange even, at the truck. If you are in a ground blind put orange on top of it, even if you have orange on inside.

First,
Choctaw, thank you for being on the front line here at home, be safe.
Ibmikey, thank you for your service - Korea was my father's war.
Closest was when my brother was acting a fool with his Security Six Ruger 357 mag - he'd been playing with it, dry firing it at the TV, unloaded, while I made lunch and our parents were out of town. He reloaded at the end of the show, and, instantly forgetting it was loaded, aimed at my head and decided to pull the trigger. At the last instant he twitched the muzzle slightly to the right and a 125 gr semi jacketed Magnum bullet zipped past my left ear at a distance of about 1 inch. Closest I ever came to filling my shorts, but I didn't. Even finished eating my sandwich...and then we had to go find a glass guy to replace the kitchen window he'd shattered, on the 4th of July - parents were coming home next day. That was expensive. Bullet? Lodged in a cactus in the back yard where it still is today. This was...ummm...30 years ago, I believe.

I've had one hit me in the head after deflecting off my hand... and a few that I could hear tumbling way overhead. but no nothing life threatning....

been hit with shot a few times hunting, once on purpose at a little over 100yds. Had bullets hit trees near me a couple times, but nothing close enough to really freak me out, 20-30yds away. I got low and got out as fast as i could. Where i hunt now its pretty open, im MUCH more worried during archery season. Ive seen people shoot pretty much strait at each other 'cause hey, its just a bow and arrow right?

Worse than that, and I have shared here before.

I walked in a few years ago on opening morning. 3 rope have permission to hunt the property and I left 1 of them at home. The other pulled into the far end of the property as I started my walk. His headlights were still on so it wasn't him but rather a trespasser. Barely light enough to walk in the fields but too dark to walk in the woods without a light. I'm walking in and hear voices whispering. Then I hear "I'm not dealing with this sh..." and a deafening roar sounds off and bits of a tree limb just above my head rain down in the woods. I turned around and went back to the truck. Called 911 as I walked out. Sheriffs deputy did nothing when he got there. I tracked them back to the property line and found their truck there a few days later, I assume they were on the property again. That truck needed some serious repairs. I haven't had a trespasser problem since.

Same guys who donated me a couple nice stands after being told to remove them by the sheriff. Same guys who got caught shortly thereafter making methamphetamine at their house back the road. Same guys who got escorted out of my back yard a couple times... I ended up moving for work but my folks are still having trouble with the family. Luckily their house got repoed so they don't have any real reason to be on that road anymore, and they stay in jail more than they stay out.

I've had lots of bullets go by my head in the military, but it was always either bad guys trying to shoot me or good guys that really knew what they were doing- in training or "for real". No reason for that to happen hunting. There's a lot to be said for analyzing terrain and angles when observing the basic rules of firearm safety- and common sense and situational awareness can't be understated either.

About 30 years ago, some punk fired a handgun at me from across the street. The report and the bullet striking the brick wall were simultaneous, as I recall it. Came out of nowhere. I just stood there watching him run away.

Some bonehead fired a .58 cal rifled musket in my direction. It must have been close - sounded like a bumblebee or fast dragonfly. I ducked down fast, and quickly looked behind to see if anyone else was in the line of fire, and ahead to see if the bonehead was reloading or something

1993 in Washington state I was shot at 3 times while up in a tree stand on the edge of a clearing. It was around 0900 and I seen a truck drive through the other side of the clearing, roughly 200 yards from the stand. It stopped and I watched the driver go to the passenger side. He got a rifle out and I thought he seen a deer in the clearing so I scanned the area looking for it. Heard the first shot and a couple of branches fall. Second shot was closer and the third hit the tree about 15 ft above my head. I quickly realized I was the target and instinctively returned fire. I hit close enough on my first shot to cause him to jump in the truck and drive off. My buddy Donny (who was hunting down in the creek to my left rear) came running over about 5 minutes later asking what I was shooting at and I showed him the 3rd shots impact. I can still remember the sound of that last bullet impacting just above me. Never did find out who owned that truck

When I was about 12 years old, my brother and grandparents and I were hiking at Buffalo Rock State Park in Illinois. There's an outdoor shooting range nearby so you constantly hear shooting there. We were walking along just having a good time, when suddenly we heard a high-pitched buzzing sound go by overhead. I hadn't had any exposure to firearms at that point so figured it was a normal thing to hear near a range. My Grandpa was a Marine and knew better. He figured it must have been a stray shot, but that it must have been close.

I admit the possibility of a stray shot sending me to meet my Maker is the one serious misgiving I have to overcome every time I head into the woods during gun season. I know the chance is slight, but the consequences can be so...permanent.

I got close to being blasted by 12 gage a number of times when drunks were crossing a fence with a loaded gun.
One time my buddy getting into my car caught his Marlin 35 on the door & shot about 1/2" over my head thru the roof--I could hear about 2 hours later when a cop pulled us over & wanted to know why we were shooting thru the roof. That was an expensive bullet.

Had some idiots on the neighboring lease drive along on the other side of a creek bed firing into the trees to 'scare the deer out'. Heard the same sound as in the second video and promptly bailed out of that box blind and scurry for cover behind a large live oak.
Went back a bit later and found 4 holes in the side of the blind that weren't there when I left it. It did manage to miss my day pack.
We called the game warden and told him what had happened and showed him the holes. He came back later to tell us he had arrested 2 guys on that lease for public intoxication. Seemed they were driving around drinking hard liquor at first light (or hadn't stopped since the night before) and were still shooting when he pulled up. One waved his gun in the direction of the GW and that pretty much ended that.

Yes, went fishing the creek behind the local range, somebody's Tommygun got away from them and peppered the trees above my head. Yes, the range had a berm.

Yes I have. Twice actually. Once was when I was walking into the woods one morning when I was 19 during rifle season. Had orange on and everything. But it was still pretty dark. Some jack hole with a lever gun decided to shoot at the sound. Luckily he was a horrible shot. Shot at me 3 times. Being young I didn't duck behind the nearest tree. I ran. That was stupid.

Second time was last year. Was scouting with a friend on some public land. We were walking out but still about 250 yards in the woods. There is a shooting range by there with a huge berm. Next thing we know we hear some "pops" and heard the whizzing sound through the tops of the trees. Then a small limb about 10 feet from my head shattered. We hit the deck. Ended up having to lay there and call 911. Waited for the sheriff to show up and have them stop the guys. Turns out they weren't shooting into the berm. The were shooting into the ground about 50 yards in front of the berm. Idiots. Anywho the sheriff had them stop and then called me on my cell and tell us it was ok to come out. I gave them a real good chewing for about 2 minutes until the sheriff told me he thought they got the point.

Where was this???

First time was in a place called Murphy Bottoms near the town of....Murphy. Second time was in Wagoner. South of their shooting range.

What you're hearing is the echo of the sonic shockwave generated by the bullet. There is no way of accurately locating the bullet's actual path without visual evidence.

When i was a teenager, my dad and i went hunting opening day of deer season to a place called Burgh Hill. We'd looked at it (public hunting area) a few weeks before and planned where to go before daylight. We climbed into a big, swampy mess of brush, undergrowth and thorns. Sat down in the middle of it, thinking that when other hunters were wandering around the open areas, deer would go to the relative safety of thick, wet heavy brush. Except we spent the entire morning screaming at the top of our lungs and crawling out on our bellies. All the yahoos were on the low rim surrounding the area we were in, shooting randomly into it "to get the deer moving". It started before daylight, when you could see the dark orange of a shotgun muzzle blast in the dark and fog, then listen to the brush crack as the slug passed through. Some were uncomfortable close, some were just unnerving to listen to them buzz through the brush. A few close enough to see impacts within arms reach. They didn't seem to hear us screaming at them, but they heard enough to start shooting every time we snapped a twig trying to move out of it. When we finally got into clear ground, we passed out a rousing round of insults about their predecessors and progeny, then went home.

Not my story, but a friend, so I'll put this in a separate post from my own. When I was in the service, a guy in one of the fighter wings went home every year to Kentucky for deer season. One year he went and didn't come back for several weeks. Turns out he was cooperating with an investigation and extended his leave. He was on his deer stand late morning and he saw a guy walking a few hundred yards away. He waved at him to indicate he'd seen him. That's a common courtesy, but not universal, here in the midwest. Basically, I know you're there and won't shoot in your direction. Guy walking immediately raises his rifle and begins firing at my friend. Obviously intentional, so he fires back, killing the man. Turns out the guy was an escaped inmate of some prison in Kentucky, had robbed a home and stole the rifle. If my buddy hadn't waved, it might not have happened, but since the con knew he'd been seen he apparently tried to kill the witness. And no, it wasn't a cock and bull story. I knew some of the admin guys that handled the leave extension and stuff.

When I was in eighth grade a friend & I were going rabbit hunting. He showed his new bolt action 12 Guage shotgun (used). He chambered a round. As soon as it closed it fired. Shot was inches from my head & blew the window & frame out beside me. I'm 58 now & this early lesson has helped me be safer with guns my whole life!!! Approximately 7years ago coyote hunting in the edge of a woods and truck stopped started shinning a spotlight along field. They must have seen a deer & shot twice. I shot three times in the air with my Ruger Ranch Rifle. They left very fast.

Yes, I have.

Once in Hollywood California in 1989 while I was in the bed of a truck (some kind of pistol), once at Lytle Creek in California in the early 90's (pistols and a rifle), once at a shooting spot north of Phoenix Arizona in the late 90's (sounded like a .22 rifle) and then I got shot in the face and left hand with some birdshot from a shotgun in Angeles Crest California when I was 10 (Cinco De Mayo 1982).

First 3 were on purpose, the last one was more of a drunken accident by some morons who were camping next to us.

Several.
Poachers blazing at skylined critters next door. Guys shooting from road, me in the background (not visible).
Trespassers ripping on deer running to me. Was hunting chucks when a guy next to the field rips a 12 ga slug at one not far away and behind............missed and skipped- zinged by my head. Have been out as a kid, in a woods..............bullets come by..............from far enough away we never heard the report.
Eh.................when they fly by you it's a good thing.
Trying to catch them might be problematic.

Stay alert, hear one come in..............move to put big timber between you and the direction of incoming.

Back when an SKS was 99 bucks as was a case of steel core..............around here more than one idiot was bouncing that stuff off the property and on to others.

Closest I've had happen to this was a friend of mine managed to hit me with a ricochet even though I was standing behind him. Luckily the bullet had been slowed enough that all it did was bust the skin open on top of my head. It caused quite a bit of bleeding, but was nowhere near as serious as it could have been.
