I've never shot the Ruger 1911, so I can't speak to Ruger's particular execution of the concept of a smaller 9mm 1911. But I have shot the Springfield EMP, which appears to be a tad smaller than the SR1911 in question, but does shoot 9mm. My experience with such a platform is limited, but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The 9mm recoil on an all-metal gun tends to be pretty tame, especially with the 1911's accommodating grips. It was a little easier on the nerves than shooting the Kimber Ultra CDP II that I was also shooting that day. However, as expected, the recoil is a little snappier than a full size metal-frame 9mm like the Beretta 92. Unfortunately, none of the Ruger SR1911 line is available for sale in my neck of the woods. Hope this helps a little.
Again, this is all on very limited experience, so, take it for what it is worth.
