When I got to work yesterday my coworker told me that his friend had a 870 Police Magnum shotgun that he wanted to sale. He said that it was in great shape and if he had the money he would have bought it.
I contacted the friend with the shotgun and he brought it over for me to look at. The gun was in the box and looked brand new. He said that he had only fired 12 rounds of buck shot in it. He had bought it just before the election and decided that he didn't need it any more. He said that he wanted $350 for it. I don't know about you, but I will buy a $550 shot gun for $350 on just about any day.

The guy told me that he did cut the toe on the recoil because it was snagging on his shirt.
I'll dress it up on my belt sander or pick up another pad.

I would say that this is my Christmas gift to myself, but I've already gotten myself so much. I'l just call it an upgrade to the home security system.

Congratulations! Excellent deal! I have two 870P shotguns, one Parkerized, and one blued. The Park'ed one is my usual duty shotgun; the blued one is still a safe queen, originally intended to be drilled-and-tapped for a Picatinney rail, to enable mounting an Aimpoint Micro. That project became side-tracked, but may resume later.

Good gun. I have rounded the toe on several recoil pads myself, but I have to say even on my first attempt I did better than that. I have been shooting Remingtons so long a factory safety is all I need.

Huh? Who are these people... everyone! needs a shotgun. Come on! :D

Score!

That is one terrific 870.

I have two 1980-made Wingmasters that I've turned into riot guns, with Flex Tab conversion kits, Remington Supercell recoil pads and short barrels. One cost $395, the other $450 (SKEET barrel'd), then there's the cost of the modifications. You certainly did well.

You're guilty of armed robbery, only he had the gun.

Everyone should have an 870 Police. The 870 is America's shotgun, and for a defense model the Police is the top of the line.

Good price! The older 870Ps are generally regarded as better than the new production models, but you got a good deal on that one for sure.

That's a first rate popper -replace recoil pad and you're money ahead. That's exactly the configuration I'd prefer any day with an added buttstock ammo sleeve and a sling...
For anyone thinking that the safety needs replacing.. simply get in the habit of racking the weapon to load the chamber -then advancing with your finger on the engaged safety until you need to fire. That was the routine I followed for many years on the street where I must have pointed a locked and loaded shotgun almost a thousand times at one live target or other. In all that time I only fired one shot...after clearing the safety, with never an AD...

Great buy Gunny.....you stole that thing.

It is what one calls win-win situation. Box-less Police Magnum in very good condition brings $350 to $400 depending on shot capacity, furniture and type of sights it has. Instead of getting $250 to $275 from LGS the seller got fair price for the gun. What you need to realize is that while new Wingmaster with Light Contour barrel, choke tubes, beautiful polish and nice wood with cut checkering is premium grade pump gun while parkerized shot barrel gun w/o choke tube isn't. Basically the new 870 Police Magnum is not $500+ shotgun.

Not bad. If you want to modify it, this is what I did...

870 Police Magnum- $250 used
14" rifle sight barrel- $192
Mesa Tactical Urbino stock- $125
Magpul M-Lok forend- $30
Tax Stamp- $200

I am still going to throw a Mesa Tactical side saddle ($65) and Scattergun Technologies 1-shot magazine tube extension ($45).

It's amazing how much more maneuverable a 14" shotgun is in tight quarters when compared to a 20" or even 18.5" barrel.

Your belt sander should take care of that recoil pad.
Brownells sells a tritium front sight that epoxies on over the stock front sight post. I put mine on years ago, and it is still solid as a rock. Still bright too.
Pray for peace.

Have you checked the price on the 870 Police Magnum lately? Bud's has them for $551.
The guy I got it from said that he had bought it new from one of the local gun shops and paid almost $600 with tax. I didn't dicker with him on the price. He told me $350 cash and that is what I gave him. He was happy and I am too.

No need to go through all that. LGS had sample gun in lightly used condition for $379. Parkerized Police Magnum 18" Cyl barrel with Xs front sight blade, ghost ring rear mounted to rear of eceiver, two-shot magazine extension, plastic stock ending with R marked Limbsaver pad. I found buying something like that already set up from factory is much cheaper way to go. All that gun needs is tactical light with mount, solid plastic follower and $6 Allen sling.

Straight out of the box THAT is maybe the best shotgun you can buy. I wouldn't change anything except for the buttstock if it was too long for me (most are). You did REAL GOOD.

For now it will stay like it is, other then cleaning up the recoil pad. May put a plug in it and use it for hunting squirrels with #4 shot. ;)

It would be more cost effective (less time and trouble) to buy replacement Remington-market pad. I think Limbsaver and another company makes some for them. Anyhow there are two types one for wood stocks and one for plastic stocks. The price is $25 to $30.

Looks a lot like the first Model 870 I had. Decent deal on a nice shotgun (overlooking the hack job on the recoil pad), at a good price.

OP, I've got the very same shotgun and you did very well. My only complaint is the ~14" LOP is too much for me.

Does anyone know a gunsmith in CT. that can cut it down for me?

Looks like a walnut stock set. Could proly sell that and slap a synth set on......pocket the diff.
My 870P was of the '80's era. Walnut (buttplate) and polished blue. Rifle sights and 2 3/4" chamber (Magnum receiver).
I got it used in super shape, added a pad and used it......sold it to a buddy.
If it had a 3" bbl I'd have kept it.
Got out of slug gunning deer, friend sold the farm after that season.....was going smoothbore for a nostalgic type of hunt.
Was fun (used Activ slugs- old stock from a store that went out of biz............got em dirt cheap).

Nice gun OP.
If it was me I'd get a 20" rifle sighted Remchoke bbl and have it parkerized to match.
And I'd leave the walnut stock on.

Deer, HD, turkey...........all in one gun :)

Must admit, my 870 and 1100 Magnum hunting guns wear synth, get beat on and still look new.
Plastic has its pluses............but also one huge minus.............it aint walnut ;)

I did round off the toe of the recoil pad. It looks pretty good and will stay on the gun. I don't plan to hunt with it. I will end up being my home defense gun.

Unless they have changed the composition of that R1 buttpad, it tends to deteriorate into an intolerably sticky mess over time -- and I mean MESSY sticky. The process appears to accelerate if the firearm lives in a hot truck during the high summer. Happened to me on both a 7615 Ranch model with gorgeous walnut furniture and an old beater 870P.
