While at the range picking up brass I found this. It is berdan primed, and is steel coated with something. But the more interesting part is the concave belt? What purpose would that have on a rifle case?

That is likely just an artifact of the manufacturing process, while the case is spun to machine the head, groove and rim; these are Russian Barnaul cases, and the little bullet-shaped logo is made of the Russian Cyrillic letters "BPZ", standing for "Barnaul Patrony Zavod"/"Barnaul Cartridge Factory".

Thanks for the help with the "bpz". With that I was able to find a better picture of the belt. Very odd. It looks like it was made for a purpose, anyone have any idea's?

I've had some of these as well. Barnaul brand ammo. In something on the interwebz that I came across there was mention of the groove being there to aid in the expansion/contraction in the chamber.
I don't know how much truth there is to that, as no other steel case ammo I've come across has that.
I still have a handful of the cases in my junk stash to confuse, or educate, newer reloaders...

I had some "Golden Bear" 30-06 ammo with the groovy belt in it. As I recall, it shot fine. I think I recall the groove being flush after shooting in a number of the cases. Is that possible, or am I pulling a Brian Williams?

I questioned this in the past on this thread. Going from memory, mine were steel cases and I was told the inverted belt had something to do with expansion in the steel case. Mine looked just like brass!
I'll try and dig up old thread for you.
Good luck

Look at Catpop's 7-23-15 thread "Range Brass Find". RC and 243winxb both helped on this one.
