Interesting finds at a gun show today

I spent the day at a Tanner gun show here in Denver (trying to sell a couple long guns; see the sales forum ;)), and actually saw some neat and interesting stuff.

The rarest by far was a 1913 dated Webley & Scott autopistol in .455 Webley. Better yet, this one was apparently the first one bought by the Royal Navy - the Navy numbered them (in addition to the factory serial numbers), and this one was stamped "1" in that spot.

I also got to handle a Mk IV Webley revolver in .455. Mmmmm (where's the drooling smiley?). I think I need one that's been converted to .45 ACP.

The only thing I was looking to buy was a good tanker Garand - and there were actually two there. Unfortunately, one was a :scrutiny: Fed-Ord with a shot out barrel, pitted receiver, and questionable internals (and all on a receiver with a 5-digit serial number). The other was even worse, a :barf: no-name job that had been adapted to sort of take BM-59 mags. I say sort of because the mag release was wobbly and ineffective and it the mags were really tight.

Oh, and I also found spare mags for my Colt 1903 - only $90 each!:what: Yeesh.

Other than that stuff, it was pretty much just the usual overpriced magazines (only $30 for a 30-round AK mag? Hooray!), some trinkety junk, and overpriced dealer tables.

Anyone else find anything of note this weekend?
 
At the last gun show here i found a heavily abused P228 preban (factory) on one table.

I asked and discovered the price was $130.

I asked if he minded removing the diamonds and platinum i was sure were inside the body of the magazine and selling the thing at a remotely reasonable price--he wasn't amused.
 
Not unusual so much as dismayed by the way I was treated. I was at a gun show this weekend in Atlanta,GA. working out a trade for a Sig. 226 in .357 (dealers, used and uncleaned) for my HK45USP C, nearly new with accesories and extra mags, when I mentioned to him that His gun was used and mine was nearly new, when this dickhead grabbed the Sig. from my hands and told me to basically leave his table. The people around me were shocked as was I. Now I,m not new to gun trading and haggleing but this guy was an absolute POS for his treatment of me.:cuss:

He'll get what he's got coming this September: prices falling through the floor.
 
Those Weblys are sooo ugly they border on making.... nah, Hi-Points are still worse.

I've never seen one for real at a show. In fact (duh) I didn't know there WAS a show today or I would have dragged dad out for some window shopping.


I always like to go, even if I don't buy anything.

I take a distinct pleasure in asking people to reduce their ridiculous prices. What's even better is when they try to BS me and explain why it's super-rare/magical/previously owned by both Jesse James and Adolf Hitler/etc. and that's why the price is so nutso-high. ;-)

Yeah, true... but the Webley at least has that nice curio/strange/neato factor to it, actually somewhat like most post-WWI European semiauto pistols do :)

I'd love to get my hands on a Frommer STOP, even if just to try out for a day :)
 
The gun shows are dying...And it isn't because of any foolish anti gun laws..It's because of the jerks that seem to be the main pushers of old junk,high prices and false history guns.. I been to one show in the last years and that was even a waste..

It's a shame too..I use to look forward to seeing new guns as reasonable prices quality use or surplus arms for a fair price..Now you have guys who purchased a bunch of $70 mausers from century and turn around and ask $200 and bitch that they cn't sell them..DUH! I could go on and on but most of us have benn here..LOL

Like I said I feel the Gun shows are soon going away under they own hands.

I go to a show about once a month and rarely buy anything. Oh, sometimes I come away with a widget or a thingamabobm or even some ammo, but the guns are usually priced so high I can't even get interested in haggling over them. My wife will occasionally buy another revolver for her collection of junk, but even those are getting too pricey. Still, I go there to breathe the air and feel the steel and talk to others who have more time than money-- like me!

That would be too bad. You can't get a whole day of comedy entertainment for such a low admittance fee (even if it's $ 12.00 now here in LV).

It's priceless!
 
Really, the Webley auto looks worse in pictures than it does in reality. It's square and boxy, but it felt solid and reassuring in the hand, and seemed quite well-made. Besides, it's a semi-auto in .455! That's just cool!

Cool addition to the gunbrary, Ian. I bought a few books on weaponry of the American War of Independence and a book on the USMC as a gift.

Almost bought another Mauser 66, but caliber was off. Bought anohter luftgewehr. Picked up a couple of what look to be excellent traveling cases. Put them to the test shortly.:cool:
 
When I go to gun shows now days I just go to look for parts (with all the on-line prices and S&H from the numerous places on the net like Numrich) and maybe a do-dad or thingamigiggy that looks interesting and would look great in my box of "what the heck are these and why did I buy them" collection :D.

As for guns, grips, ammo, etc.., the prices are just way too high. I was really disappointed on ammo prices, what they wanted for their ammo, you can get it allot cheaper from Cheaperthandirt including S&H charges :(.

At the last show here, there was a table of real "fake" ivory grips (yes, this is how they marked them)... for ONLY a small price of $250 per set.

At least they didn't make me wipe the coke off of the table as it spewed through my nose :evil: , well, they may have tried but I left too quickly.

Also, there was a dude selling SKS replacement part kits. You know, they ones you get at Sarco and can get two or three full sets for around $200 if that.... $1000 DOLLARS PER.. yes folks, you read that right ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS per set.. found out that you could only get a complete parts set from him, he was the only "authorized" dealer for xyz company. I wonder if SARCO knows about him :confused: .

But, as was said before, the entertainment value is well worth the $5 to get in.

Heh...I have been to a couple shows where everything had 4+ digit price tags and was really worth it. The Colorado Gun Collectors have an annual (or is it semiannual?) show that is entirely pre-1950, and mostly pre-1900. More revolvers and lever-actions there than you can shake a stick at. It's one show where the "just for display" tables really are worth studying (IIRC, they give out a prize for the best display table at the show).
 
gun shows really really do suck these days. i remember , back in the day, when there would be 2 or 3 dealers of surplus ammo. these days if more than 1 show up its a miricale. i remember the days of cheap and plentiful guns. these days its mostly over priced crapola. i get a laugh out of some of the prices on some of the guns. $900 bushmaster 17s. $30 beat up 60% usgi mags. i swear its the exact same stuff, on the exact same dealers tables, at the exact same prices year after year after year. i go to the shows to buy ammo, powder, primers, and little doo dads that are hard to find.
 
Well, it's like this.

I can shop on the internet without driving somewhere and walking a mile from the parking lot and then paying someone to let me in the door after they disarm me.

Plus, if I buy something on the web I don't get the heebie jeebies walking back a mile to the car out in the back of the gun show parking lot with my unloaded carry gun (from the folks who disarmed me) and whatever treasure I bought.

Plus, if I don't like a price on the web, I go to another website and the owner of the website doesn't give me the evil eye for handling his overpriced merchandise when I clearly didn't intend to buy.

Plus, when I start looking at something on the web, the owner doesn't come over and (watch me like I'm going to steal it the moment he turns his back/tell me how rare it is/tell me how much he had to pay for it.)

Plus, when I shop on the web, I don't have some13 year old know-it-all next to me telling me how I don't want that piece of garbage, I should buy the Jennings cause his grand-dad has one and it's great.

Plus, I don't have to put up with crowds of people with sloppy food items in their hands jostling me on the way to the jerky stand from the concession stand.

Plus, I don't get on the internet only to find that there are more tables selling jerky, cheap jewelry, alleged knives, and Chinese made toys than are selling guns, parts and ammunition.


And, last, but not least, I don't get on the web only to find that the prices are higher than I could get any day of the week in my local gun store.

Another one who thinks gun shows are going to do themselves in without help from the antis.
 
I can't count the number of 'Rare' Yugo M48's I've seen for sale for $300+

I even saw individual 5 shot clips of turkish 8mm ammo for sale a a very reasonable $3 per clip.:rolleyes:
 
You cant inspect a gun on the internet before you buy, JohnKSa, and that is the one big plus (The only one) Gun shows have, The guy at the table might ba a total &@*@ , but if the gun looks good, and the price is there, that's all you need. I bought from and sold to gun show table holders (dealers is too nice a term for some) I wouldn't give the time of day to otherwise, but the gun was good and the price was right, or the price he paid was right if I was selling. To be fair, I have bought guns and parts off the Internet also, and all my dealings there have been good.

Besides the gun shows are very entertaining, as has been previously mentioned. :D
 
For the most part I have had good luck at shows. I tend to buy from private sellers or small hobby dealers(ie gun show loophole) Most of the big dealers are jerks and I don't feel like giving them any of my money.

I still enjoy going to all of the shows. I try to make it to one every other month or so.
 
How to get better than usual deals while still being able to inspect the gun.

Go to gun shops on the days when there is a gun show in town. ;)
